Q: Are the mugs micro wave safe?

Yes the mugs are microwave safe. Its one of the best dinner sets that I got from Amazon.

Q: what is the difference between 'Vitrelle" and sets that do not have this ? i.e. Buttercup and Kobe?

I'm pretty sure that Kobe is Vitrelle. Like David said, Vitrelle is the laminating that they use to make the products, Kobe and Buttercup are patterns. I would say call Corelle to get a clear answer, but I'm pretty sure any of their products that are thin glass plates and bowls have this process. Where the things like coffee cups and thicker ceramic looking dishes do not.

Q: How hot do these get hot in the microwave?

only the portion of the plate or bowl that the hot food touches gets hot. I did not get the cups so do not know if the handle gets hot.
