the best book I have ever read
This truely sad but exciting book kept me hooked for 3 days solid. As my grandfather was a fepow the camps described I could imagine the horrors they endured. This story of a young life forced to edure such awful things in the hope of one day to be free again, to be entitled to and allowed the most basic of human rights. This book is fiction but anyone who has an education of war history knows these things happened. The characters pulled on my heart, the deaths involved and the sheer determination to do everything humanly possible to make life hard work for the enemy. Sometimes its the constant small difficulties that drag you down to a point of the big issues having a serious impact. This is how the resistance in this story gave the impression they worked, slow and steady wins the race as they say. Everyone played a part in building a better future and standing up for what's right. This book is a must read for adults as well a teens. It made me cry at the end and as the book was so quick stepping, a new event taking place every chapter. I was unable to find a suitable place to stop reading for the night. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

One Of The Best
A truly remarkable book, which held my attention from start to finish. Still not sure if it's fact or fiction, although it does say on the back cover, "Inspired by real people, real places, and real events." Maybe best to assume, fiction based on fact. A superb read in any event. Buy it, - you'll love it!

A great historical novel for children and adults alike
Just finished reading this book and thoroughly enjoyed it; it's gripping but not too heavy, pulls the reader in with action and a developing love story, while at the same time vividly describing the doubts, fears, hopes and challenges faced by teenagers all over the world. More poignantly, all of these are set in the darkest days of Nazi occupation of Belgium. The main character, Nicole shines with optimistic youth, struggling to maintain her identity and freedom under the toughest of circumstances. Her bravery and wit are not to be underestimated.Other characters also come through strongly; the German priest, her teacher and her grandmother, as well, of course, as her love.I must confess, I guessed fairly early on, the identity of The Hawk but that in no way lessened my enjoyment. For students of history, this makes a great introduction to the deprivations suffered, risks taken and above all the incredible courage shown by people at all levels during wartime.

The book is easy to read and worthwhile for anyone who needs to ...
Having read a lot of history, I was surprised to learn that young people of 15 were involved in the resistance and the feats they were willing to undertake for the cause of freedom. The book captures the atmosphere of the times quite well. even though the style was a little simplistic at times and characters too black and white. The book is easy to read and worthwhile for anyone who needs to be reminded of the price of freedom.

Well written
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found that I couldn't put it down, I just head to find out what was happening to the characters. Not until I had finished did I realise that the story was fictional. Well researched by the author. Would recommend.
