I'm a grandma buying this camera for my college granddaughter. which film should i buy for her to get started? i know it needs 35mm, but i'm confused.

For color, I like FUJIFILM Fujicolor Superia X-TRA 400. For black and white, I like Kodak Professional Tri-X 400. Both of them are about $13 per roll. It could be cheaper (say $9) if you could find local camera stores. Be careful to double-check that the film you buy is 35mm (it is called 135 sometimes), not 120. For a 36-exposure roll, you can take at least 72 photos. Sometimes you will see 24-exposure rolls, which can give you 48 photos. Hope it helps!

Does the window for the film count up or down?

It counts up, but the numbers are very tiny.

Is the leather used synthetic or not?

It is not real leather. This is a plastic camera that is made to look retro.

Does this camera strictly shoot half-frame or is it capable of shooting full-frame as well?

It is strictly half-frame. The only control option you have is to turn on or turn off the flash. Everything else is fixed.
