Can you still recycle the cans?

If you have a deposit on each can then I just wouldn't crush them. The bottle/can returns like in NY use the barcode to determine whether it is eligible for redemption. But if it's based in weight for recycling then it wouldn't matter.

Are the cans still recycleable in states with deposits and can returns?

The California rule states "One of the requirements for a container to be eligible for CRV payment is that the container is labeled with the CRV message. ". I would assume that you would have to retain the caps and put them into the empty cans. If you are getting a refund based on weight you would want to anyway since that is probably a large portion of the weight.

Will this work on old tin beer cans?

Probably not, but you probably shouldn’t be trying to open them anyway.
