This game is much more frustrating than it should be (coming from a gaming mother)
I love Zelda games and have been playing any of them I could get my hands on since a kid. Breath of the Wild was awesome. Tears of the Kingdom is the same Hyrule as in BOTW, so you know the graphics are amazing and the whole thing is very well done. That being said, the game play in Tears of the Kingdom is just frustrating and extremely stupidly time consuming. My 10 year old kept whining whenever I told him his time playing video games was up, and that the whole time he barely got anywhere in the game. I started to play it too and this game brought out much frustration in me as well. I usually enjoy gathering and perusing every part of a game, trying to complete every task the creators thought up, but TOFK is really driving me nuts and I just want to finish the tasks as quickly as possible- that's how long they take. As Link, the worst part is that there is a lot of walking back and forth with constant obstacles in the way. Like talk to character A, than B, than A, than C than A and B and oh, they are all forever away from each other with mountains in between. Then you have to build these stupid carts and gliders to get you places, and that takes FOREVER because if the item is not angled at the exact right spot, it doesn't work or falls apart super easily, so you end up angered and just give up to realize you spent 30 minutes doing absolutely nothing to progress you in the game. I wish they would just let you build a cart and save it to you inventory to save you hours! Then there's the "depths".... I want to shake whomever made that place and ask them what were they thinking. Its an area that is just full of impossible foes, hills and boulders and giant roots every 2 seconds, cliffs- all in pitch black where you have to light the darkness by throwing bright bloom seeds every 20 feet. There's also the "gloom," which is a sludge that zaps your health that cant be recovered, that is in large patches that the only way to get through is to use, you guessed it, the time consuming vehicles-that don't go over said hills, cliffs, etc. so you drive 3 seconds, get off the cart to fix or move your vehicle over the the hill, only to drive it 4 more seconds and repeat the process. I hate the darkness because I could literally spend 3 hours roaming around and just going in circles all the while being assaulted by monsters that can kill Link in just a few hits because- oh, the darkness takes away hearts permanently until a light root is found- and those are a pain to find because the cliffs and trees and hills always block them from view. The whole game is like that, just back and forth because the quests are just too time consuming to the point of being unenjoyable. So, unless you have literally nothing to do in life, I would avoid this one- especially if you have kids because they will be whining and crying about it constantly and drive you insane. I am to the point where I just want to quit it- that's how much this game frustrates me.I should note that my friend said the exact same thing, which is sad because they are first time Zelda gamers and she is starting to hate Zelda and wont buy it for her kids again. So Tears of the Kingdom is DEFINATELY NOT a great representor of the joy in the Zelda series.
