The best USB SSD drive that you can buy! Don't look at anything else!
In short, I needed an SSD to back up my MacBook Pro. In the past, I used a spinning hard drive for backup using SuperDuper software and the process was painfully slow. Often, for about 500GB of data, the backup and restore took up to an hour. With an internal SSD on my MacBook Pro it made perfect sense that the destination backup should also go on an SSD drive where transfer speeds would significantly increase. One more thing to consider: spinning hards drives have a much higher failure rate than SSD drives. I can't begin to tell you how many spinning backup drives I have purchased in the past that have ultimately failed.SSD is the future and the fact that prices have dramatically decreased on these drives gives no-one an excuse for not buying them.I did a lot of research on various SSD drives before selecting this SanDisk 1TB drive. My first choice was a Samsung in a colorized metal case. The reviews, however, led me to believe that there were some major issues with the Samsung drives as they included embedded software that was difficult to remove. This is not something anyone wants when buying an SSD drive.Reading the reviews on this SanDisk Extreme, it was easy to see that this would fit perfectly for my needs. The reviews across the board were very positive. No embedded software. This particular SSD has been rated as one of the very fastest USB drives available on the market as of this date.Upon arrival, I was astonished at how small this drive actually is. I mean, it's absolutely tiny. You can fit it into your jeans pocket and you would not feel it. We really have come a long way in external SSD drive portability.I am not particularly happy with the covering on this drive. It's a dust magnet. The second I placed it on my table it had already collected airborne dog hair. However, on the plus side, this thing is so rugged that you can drop it from just about any height and it won't break. So, I guess that is more important than anything else.It was nice to see that the drive includes a USB-C cord with USB-A adapter. The cord also securely fits the drive without any wiggle. The only thing negative I have to say about the cord is that it's too short.I am including in my photos the result of a recent backup of my MacBook Pro via SuperDuper software. You can see that about 425GB of data was backed up in 30 minutes time. With a spinning drive, that would have taken 2-3 times longer. This drive is really super fast! This drive does come formatted for Windows. If you buy it for your Mac, you need to go to DISK UTILITY (in your applications folder), select the SanDisk drive, then click on ERASE. You will want to format the drive in OSX Extended Journaled. The format takes seconds to do. You are then ready to transfer data to the drive.By far, this is the best SSD drive I have ever owned. Do not hesitate to consider this above any other.

I am blown away by this drive
It's very rare that I'm surprised by electronics, but the new SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is one time that my expectations were surpassed. The drive is much smaller and lighter than I thought it would be when I first ordered it. This drive weights next to nothing and is wrapped in a durable, rubberized coating to keep it water resistant. When it was delivered, I was convinced that only the hard case, which I ordered with this drive, was in the package. That's how feather-light this drive is.More important, it is FAST! I connected it to my late-2016 15" MacBook Pro with Touchbar in native USB-c mode and this drive is instantaneous in access speed! If you ever need to boot from an external drive, this one is the one to get. It behaves like an internal drive and is almost as fast. I got the 1TB model which is perfect for me, but it's available all the way up to 2TB.My guess is that older machines would benefit less from this drive since USB 2 or 3 is a much slower interface. On the other hand, if you own a computer with a USB-c native interface, this is the drive to invest in.For the record, I own an internal SanDisk Extreme 480GB SSD that I've owned for 5 years. I've moved it from my old MacBook Pro to an older iMac and now an older Mac Mini. It has continued to work perfectly and transformed each machine where I installed it. That's why I was confident in trying the Extreme Portable, and I am absolutely not disappointed. If you need additional storage, and external is the only option (think Macs with SSDs that can't be upgraded), this is definitely the drive to invest in. Very impressive!

Great
Overall great tech. The drive delivers on the claimed speeds and capacity. While not the fastest portable SSD on the market, the recent sale price is good for 2019 for a product of this class. Even with long transfers the temps stay within a reasonable expectation. The size and form factor is convenient, and the weight is lower than I thought it would be. It does include a USBC SS10 cable, and also brings a USBC to USBA adapter. The whole cable with adapter seems to achieve SS10 speeds on all capable ports I have tried.Flash drives often promise high speeds, but rarely deliver. This product is for people that want that speed and don't mind something larger than a flash drive. This product is much faster than any portable HDD (spindle drive) on the market. It is comparable in speeds to most portable SSD's, with only a select handful that are faster. However, those handful each seem to have one or more drawbacks that are significant. Usually its that they are larger and heavier, many have temperature/reliability issues, and always are more expensive.Portable NVME's are ultimately going to render this type of product obsolete, but we are not there yet. The biggest problem for NVME is heat. Those suckers get very hot, which then requires a much larger and heavier case with a substantial heatsink on it. You may consider making your own. The NVME portable enclosures are fairly cheap, and the drives themselves have gotten much cheaper 1TB and below. If you are willing to carry something larger and heavier, this is an option. I just dont think they are ready for prime time yet.I would buy this again, albeit at a much lower price and/or larger capacity. A 4TB one of these would be perfection for me.

Great companion for iPad Pro
I've been using this portable drive for quite a while now, and I can say I am really impressed. I got this as a companion for my iPad Pro 12.9. I like editing quick videos on my iPad and realized that I'll be needed an external storage for media assets and exporting final video. This portable drive feels like a local drive in terms of speed. Exporting 10 minute videos on this drive takes only a few minutes , and it is done before I could even finish making my coffee. I also love that it is water and shock resistant. I have dropped this a few times, and it's still working fine. The form factor is probably one of the things I like best. This drive is so tiny, although in the pictures it may look big, so I was surprised when I got this drive. It is so compact that sometimes I forgot that it is in my pocket. Overall, I love this drive. If ever I'll be needing another portable drive, I won't hesitate to buy this again, or a newer model if ever available.

Excellent Portable SSD
This is a great little portable SSD. I’ve almost exclusively used Sandisk flash drives for the past 15 or so years with few issues. It is amazing how much the price per GB has become and while I was somewhat interested in this drive when I first saw it, the $300-$450 asking price for the TB was a bit too much to get be to buy one. When I saw it on the prime day sale for $200 I knew I wanted to pick it up.It’s very small in size and as you can see by my picture it is about 5x the size of a regular Sandisk flash drive. It is very basic and I don’t think I see any lights come on but it has one USB C port and it comes with a short male USB C to male USB C cable with a USB C to USB 3.0 adapter.I didn’t buy this specifically for speed but using the USB C to USB 3.0 on a computer with USB 3.0 has been about as fast as expected for both read and write speeds. I won’t likely be doing a speed test but if you’re interested you can find them online and just know that it will be speedy and much faster than the old HDD or USB 2.0 drives.I bought this in part to back up my photos of my baby and even with the RAW photos I should have more than enough room for years to come. I don’t know that I prefer this to a flash drive because the capacity is already comparable and you get a much smaller package. Also in a few years they will likely have larger capacity flash drives with comparable speeds and a similar if not better price point. I am a fan of Sandisk and am impressed with this little drive. The current price is $250 which would probably deter me still but if you can find one for $200 I think that’s a great deal and can recommend it.

This Appears to be an Excellent Portable SSD Choice
First day's use:Nice size, easy to use, very fast. A bit pricey, but I'm expecting QUALITY and RELIABILITY. 4 Stars!Suggested Improvements (to be awarded 5 Stars!): Two dedicated USB cables instead of just one cable with an adapter would be much preferred.Mac security file on disc (instead of requiring a seperate download) in addition to the included Windows security file would have been courteous.Paper instruction sheet too small to read. PDF on disc would have been nice.Never-the-less, this apprears to be an excellent peripheral for my 2015(model year) Macbook Pro

A SPEED DEMON WORTH EVERY PENNY!
This hard drive is a speed demon! I use a pair of them to render video off my laptop, and they’ve improved the renter time SIGNIFICANTLY! I’ve used them through thunderbolt three connection... one drive has the video to write and one to read making it as close to a RAID setup as I’m comfortable with. I had thought about buying a RAID desk but the possibility of one of the drives failing and bricking my hard drive was in my opinion not a worthwhile investment. My arrangement seems to do the job probably just as well. I haven’t really pushed their durability since they’re mostly hooked up to my MacBook Pro on my desk, but I am confident they will hold up to the manufacturer specifications. I have seen the drives hold up to every other promise by SanDisk. They are definitely lightweight and very portable. They easily could fit in my pocket with the smart phone and barely be noticed. My experience with them has been through thunderbolt 3, with very limited use on USB 3.0, but even when using 3.0 the speed has been impressive. I definitely recommend this drive! I was lucky enough to get a lightning deal on it and get it for an unbelievable price that I couldn’t pass up on! I don’t regret a single penny! Great job SanDisk!

Amazing portable and resilient product, needs formatting to optimize, however.
This is an amazing product, it is so portable and convenient. It is a must have for people who need an external hard drive while on-the-go. Easy to travel with, so slim you can simply keep it connected to your laptop by the short provided cable as you walk and work. For me mobility with my laptop is very important and this goes above and beyond.I have noticed it does get warm as other reviewers have stated but no more than any other ssd, it’s quite normal. This product is very thin and so there is less space between its internal components and the casing so it will definitely feel warmer than larger external lard drives. However, to maintain its longevity I do make sure it has breathing room (usually I just have it dangling from my laptop anyway) to dissipate heat. Also, use free software such as crystal disk info to check its health and temperature (I do this for any and all large memory devices)Lastly, one issue is that it’s default settings for memory allocation are quite silly. So once you get it make sure to format it, and edit the memory allocation size to the smallest value. Otherwise you’ll have a small 50kb file take up 1mb for no reason. If you are gifting this to the less technologically inclined simply do the formatting yourself.

worth the price !
Excellent! I used this as my boot drive for my Mac ... it has greatly improved the overall speed of my Mac as compared to when it was booting from the HDD that it came with.

Super produit
