Q: should I wash the product before putting it on my dog?

Yes. This robe is for aiding in drying your pup. My dog hates being rubbed down so right after washing him I put this on and voila- limited drippage and the drying starts!

Q: The measurements seem huge. Are they correct?

They were correct for my Labrador retrievers

Q: Does this have to be put on over the head first? Or does that work just with Velcro?

Head first - that part isn't adjustable

Q: Would this work in my double coated Tibetan Mastiff?

They're not very thick, and don't have much drying properties. But it works to keep my dogs from freezing after a bath.
