Does this work as well for essential oils as well as a diffuser will you put the essential oil directly into the water?

There's a little tray behind humidifier that you can drop the essential oils you like on the aroma pad, the air blows across it, it does work and you do get the scent. In addition, i would like strongly recommend the lavender scented pad (given by seller), you will get a very soothing scent!

How does the sleep mode work? Does it loud?

Both the light and display could be off. The sleep mode is sooooo good to me as im a light sleeper. It’s quiet and lights could off, I like that it doesn’t beep at all. so you can leave it running all night without disturbing your slumber. In fact, I find the white noise it produces to be quite soothing.

Can I use tap water? Buying distilled water is both expensive and inconvenient.

Directions suggest distilled water but I'm using plain tap. I bought this as there is a cleaning filter to help reduce the impurities. I do regular cleanings following the seller suggestions because the mung would builds up quick and you don't want to be breathing that stuff.

What does the colored light mean?

It is the humidity comfort indicator to informs you the humidity condition of your room. Red means dry, green is comfort, blue is a little wet for people.
