Adequate but antiquidated
The book was sufficiently written to explain the sitar and gives sites for buying, music, etc. Can't really complain about that. This was an improvement over the last book I read on the subject. My gripe, and a big one at that, is the whole "stuck in tradition" of the sitar. Yes, its from India, but why can't they use our music notation system instead of a foreign ones that no one outside the sitar industry uses. I'd like to see comparisons to our guitar and more photos of the sitar hardware explaining. Hey, maybe even a CD with some videos. Why not? Why not discuss various sitars and what makes one different from another? Yes, a built in shopping guide. Or put some videos on Youtube to go along with the book. Traditional Indian Sitar music is a drag. To me, its potential exists in finding its way into the music mainstream and the 21st century. It has to break with tradition and explore new uses which is what the Beatles and some others did, once upon a time. Why did everyone stop? The book was not enough to satisfy much of this. but amongst sitar books, it was a good as any, I suppose. I'll leave it at that.

Good for beginning western muso's
A clearly written book for the budding sitarist. Written by a Westerner for Westerners, it has suited this early stage of my sitar journey. If you have a guitar background, then this will make learning the sitar much quicker and the western notation helps as you get the hang of the sargam system. The CD is good and to the point, plenty of exercises to get your Rip-It-Like-Ravi chops down hard.Having only had a week or so to peruse and play I suspect a few more months will reveal how deep into the rabbit hole this book can take me. So far so good!

A Beginning Sitarist Needs This Book
This book is an excellent instruction manual for the beginning sitar player. Not only does it cover the various types and methods of Indian music, but it also comes complete with a digital library of ragas and tabla tracks to practice with. Invaluable!

It is clear and easy to understand
This is a well written and informative text. It is especially helpful as reference and guide a being a relatively new sitar player (2 years). I do not live near my teacher. It is clear and easy to understand. I would recommend it to anyone interested in the sitar and India Classical Music. Thank you Josh Feinberg.

Good value
I’m an intermediate sitar player and I found this a very readable overview of theory. I haven’t tried the ragas yet.

No videos for print version
Book for beginners but the videos are not available for print version which is a shame as one cannot see how to practice. Buy ebook as it says that videos are available for only e-print
