AMC's Best Day Hikes in the Berkshires: Four-Season Guide to 50 of the Best Trails in Western Massachusetts Paperback – May 30, 2015

I love all of these AMC day-hike books, and this is no exception. The stated difficulty of the hikes is dead on, and I love the extra detail about the elements of the naturescape that you can encounter along the duration of the hikes.

Great book if you like to hike in the Berkshires. The directions to the trailheads are accurate and easy to follow. Trail directions are also great.

Though I used this book only briefly to plan a weekend hike, I'm sure I will use it again in the future. I have used AMC's equivalent book on the White Mountains with great success. In the Berkshire book it was particularly helpful to check the chart in the beginning where it gives you the level of difficulty, approximate hiking time, distance and elevation of each trail, sorted by area. So helpful to quickly narrow down some criteria; then you can read more about the trails you've selected. The texts give you a trail map and about five pages of description and further information.

I have enjoyed trying to knock out each hike in this book through this year. Although, I will be skipping the hikes that don't allow dogs or that I have to pay to get in. I would prefer more historical information rather than tree and bird info, but that's just a personal preference. Some of the hikes are quite short and easy for me so I do an additional hike or two to round out the day. I recommend borrowing it from the library first to see if it's what you're looking for.

Trail drawings are incomplete and can easily mislead hikers. We found two trail maps that were misnamed... they named one trail as the title, but map and description is of another trail. The titles were taken from the trail head parking area sign, but illustrated a trail (incomplete at that) by another name. Stick with the state trail brochures.
