Mellon Collie is a Gorgeous Piece of Art
Anyone who grew up in the 1990's are aware of who The Smashing Pumpkins are. You have that one kid who knows songs like "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" or "Tonight, Tonight." Unfortunately, many people are missing out on what I think is one of the best albums music has ever generated. This album just happens to be the 2 disc/Triple LP "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness." This album takes you on a journey. Literally. Once you flip the album on, your mind soars out of reality and into pure space. You can see planets and the moon. The front cover and other art from the album really sums up what I mean. Take the first song "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness." A gorgeous piano song that perfectly opens the album. I find this song to be complimentary to the next song "Tonight, Tonight." At this point, your mind is calm and tearful, since both songs are really gripping and emotional. The next thing you know, BAM! The third track, "Jellybelly," bursts into your ears. The song is loud but amazing at the same time. As track four "Zero" comes on, you are completely into the rock genre mood. Track 5 "Here is No Why" (probably the best song on the album,) comes on. The song is so great I can barely put it into words. The vocals and heroic guitar solo send shivers down your spine. As the next few songs come on, your musical atmosphere gets bigger and more explosive; with the exception of track 7 "To Forgive." The fuzz of "Love" and the salt shaker/harp ballad of "Cupid de Locke" starts to slow the album down to a more digestible pace. "Galapogos" turns gorgeous rock into hope, and "Muzzle" is a song about an epiphany, giving you insight on Billy Corgan's life. "Porcelina of the Vast Oceans" soars over your entire body. The song is a perfect combination of psychedelia and pure rock. The first disc closes with James Iha's (the 2nd guitarist) song "Take Me Down," a quiet yet breathtaking performance.Disc 2 opens up with "Where Boys Fear to Tread" and "Bodies." Two loud and dark songs with excellent guitar riffs and awesome lyrics. As "Thirty-Three" and "In the Arms of Sleep" come on, your musical pace starts to die down. The songs perfectly slow down the rate of speed that the album gives off. Both songs are dreamy and magnificent. "1979" comes on. It is a softer song with electronic influences. The song is a little faster than the previous two. Corgan perfectly pieces the three together to get your mind tempo back up. "Tales of a Scorched Earth" comes on and blows your brain out of your butt. The song definitely takes some getting used to, but after a couple of listens you can understand why the song is necessary on the album. The 7th track, "Thru the Eyes of Ruby" comes on. It is easily the most beautiful track on the 2nd disc. The song is slow, psychedelic, loud, heroic and emotional at the same time. The soft mood carries itself into the next track "Stumbleine." The next track, "XYU," is a real rocker. It's loud and angry. The next track "We Only Come Out at Night," is definitely different than the other songs on the album. It's cheery and catchy. It reminds me of a childhood singalong. "Beautiful" is a successful mix of dream pop and classic rock. "Lily (My One and Only,)" and "By Starlight" start to send the album down the goodbye path. They serve as pieces that mature the album; reminding the listener that a journey cannot last forever. "Farewell and Goodnight" closes the entire 28 song album. The song features vocals from every band member. The incorporation of several vocals is a way to say goodbye to the listener, personally. As you can see by reading the review, Mellon Collie is the most gorgeous piece of musical art that any artist has put out. Albums like "The Wall" and "Ok Computer" are perfect albums, but they don't take you on a journey like Mellon Collie does. If you haven't bought this album, it is a must do for any music lover looking for a ride into Pumpkinland.

The definitive Mellon Collie (remaster box set edition)
This is for the deluxe reissue/remaster and the album overall. Keep in mind, the Pumpkins are one of my 2-3 favorite bands of all time, one I grew up with. The album? It's still great after 18+ years (man, I feel old typing that). No, not every track is a home run, but a ton of them are, and there are enough great songs that it's the rare double album that you can't just dump filler and fit all the great songs on one disc. Billy's voice has been, is, and always will be one of those that you love or hate. No one can deny his great writing and guitar work though (if you do, well, you're probably not looking at it from an unbiased POV). Unless you absolutely can't stand Billy's voice, everyone should hear this at least once. I still love Siamese Dream more, but that's just me; as it is, this is a fantastic album that sometimes doesn't get its due. Now, the remaster: like the others Corgan's done thus far (Gish, Siamese Dream), THIS is how remasters should be done. No sign of loudness war BS (good lord just listen to Nevermind's "remaster" to hear how they should NOT be), just going back and carefully adjusting some levels here and there to really make the music sound like it was always intended to. The bass sounds cleaner and not as distorted (a problem Siamese Dream had at louder volume - again, opinion), the guitars crisper, etc. Most would have to hear the original immediately before the remaster to notice, but when you do, it's subtle but clear: this is the definitive version. I must also mention the packaging is gorgeous. A solid box that includes a booklet with Billy's thoughts on each song and the album in general, full lyrics for the main album, and some nice Mellon Collie art on sturdy (but not thick) cardboard. While I wish some of the extra tracks weren't reused (ie the songs that appear later on on The Aeroplane Flies High), when taken with what else is included, it's hard to nitpick about. A few of these even hardcore SP fans (the ones that have every version of the old demos back to 1988/etc, like me) never had clean copies of, and it's great to finally have them. In summary: if you love this album and/or are a big SP fan, it's WELL worth buying this new version for the remastered core album alone. The rest is added icing to a great cake.

i forget to forget...nothing is important...
October 1995I waited for months for that date to arrive, and so I arrived early to Spec's on Fowler Avenue to purchase Mellon Collie. I was already a long time fan of the Pumpkins, hinging upon their ever word and chord so my expectations were pointed to the Heavens. the next level. For those of you first reading this, I can only offer a biased POV. Billy's songs always made sense to me. Like a lost cousin who arrived with songs that remind me that I was alive. To the Sacred and Profound, you will not only be NOT disappointed, but your dreams reaffirmed. This is a celebration of The Pumpkins at their height, with so many outtakes that so many bands wished they would make.Billy Corgan is an amazing musician. Granted his vocals are not the best but his song craft, his production remain top notch. For anyone, anywhere who wondered what some of the best music there was circa 1995-1996...this is it. Rewarding and life reaffirming, a true passed to time...and it's just as much yours now as I was mine then.Well worth your investment.

Great Deluxe Edition
Way more then what I expected. For some reason when I first looked at this I thought it was just 5 disks in a small box about the same size as a cd case similar to the packaging of the Siamese Dream Deluxe Edition. Instead I got a package that measures approx 1.5FT X 1.5FT Squared. It has lots of great extras in the box not including the bonus disks. (Sorry no spoilers) When Mellon Collie first came out in the 90's I wasn't a huge fan of SP and only enjoyed the first disk of Mellon Collie. I AM SO GLAD I GAVE IT A SECOND CHANCE. The extras in this deluxe edition are awesome even if you're not a die hard fan and even better if you are. I paid about 10 or 20 dollars less then when it was first released and still think it was totally worth it.
