Great software
I've been using various iterations of this software since the early 90s. I have all the data since them stored in the software. That's how much I trust this software.

A rip off!
I paid $84 for this and it will not allow me to download. I tried on my iPad, my iPhone, and it will not download. I want my money back.

If you are not a new subscriber, read this
If you are not a new subscriber, you will have to jump through hoops to get the validation to work. You will need to create a new Quicken profile. You may need to contact Quicken support for guidance. Enter the validation code through your online Quicken profile, not through the desktop application. When your 'old' file links to your new profile, you may have to relink all of your financial accounts. You may discover that some categories are missing from lesser-known financial institutions and you may need to re-enter categories/transfers between accounts. Is it worth it? For me, it was.

More complicated than I expected
I was looking for a simple check writing program to keep track of my personal bills, with some reporting. This is more time consuming and complicated to set up than I anticipated. If I could return it, I would love to.I am not using it.

comprehensive, but quicken prioritzies adding new widgets over stability and reliability.
I have used quicken for over 30 years, through different versions, mac and windows and different owners. It is the most comprehensive money manager around. But there is a price to pay - reliability and stability. The current windows version gets updated several times a month. Some updates corrupt your files, so you will see an update that adds new features and the next several updates to fix the crashes it created. When it crashes, it usually corrupts your file. There is no robust method to fix a corrupted file anymore, as they removed that ability. So my recommendation is not to use it if you are starting out and get a simpler more reliable software, or be prepared to invest a LOT of time recovering from bugs if you want all the bells and whistles it provides. At this point, I find it is useful for estimates, but I simply dont trust it enough to depend on the exact numbers it provides. I have sent numerous recommendations to slow down the upgrades and test them thoroughly before releasing, but they seem happy to continue releasing buggy software and have the users test them before they fix it.

I’ve been using Quicken since 1999, and I’m considering my options
I used quicken from 1999-2013, and found it to be very useful and relatively easy to use once you get used to a few minor idiosyncrasies. Then I started an LLC and used Quickbooks.I recently started a different business which is a corporation, so I need to keep my personal books completely separate. I tried installing Quicken 2013 on Windows 11 and found it to be incompatible to the point it was unusable.I was hesitant to commit to the subscription model and also upgrading to a version after Intuit sold Quicken to another company. But after trying to muscle through manually entering my account history and dealing with a buggy obsolete program, I realized my time is worth the subscription price and upgraded so I could get bank downloads and a version compatible with modern Windows.I am very disappointed. Part of it may be because I have become accustomed to double-entry bookkeeping, but I can confidently say that a large part of it is because of reasons this new version falls short.I constantly need to close and reopen the software after working in the file for an hour or so. It becomes ridiculously slow. It feels like the database is bloated, and gradually, every added transaction takes longer and longer to save. Restarting the app fixes it temporarily. This may not be an issue for users who are in and out of the program relatively quickly each day or week.Linked transactions get screwy when downloading transactions and matching transfers. If I have a downloaded deposit in checking, and then a downloaded transfer in savings to match to it, Quicken asks “is this the deposit dated (date) for (amount)?” and I select yes. What ends up happening is the savings transaction is linked one way. In the savings register, it shows a transfer to checking and I can “go to matching transfer”. But then that transaction in checking shows nothing for the category where it should show the savings account. It isn’t a display issue because I cannot select “go to matching transfer” back to the savings transaction. There is no indication in the checking register that it is linked to anything, and no categorization. If I delete one of the transactions, or change the category on the savings transaction, the linked transaction also gets deleted from the other register. This behavior makes sense for linked transactions but is problematic when one account does not appear to be linked to anything.Likewise, say I have a payment to a bill. In checking, the payment is split, with a portion transferring to the bill account’s balance and the remainder categorized as a payment fee.If I edit or delete the transaction in the bill account’s register, the checking transaction’s split still shows as a transfer to the bill, but is actually orphaned. This is only apparent if you try to “go to matching transfer” and Quicken says this is linked to a transaction that no longer exists. Prior versions used to simply uncategorize split line where it used to be a transfer. As I have been back-entering my data and re-figuring how to map categories vs transfers, and where positive and negative values belong for each account type, the fiddling has created much frustration from unexpectedly deleted, orphaned or ghost-linked transactions. This works well as a simple checkbook register and I love the payment reminders/auto entry to track bills and payments that are coming up. That is the primary reason I have used Quicken for so many years. Pre-entering and forecasting budgeted items in the register shows me exactly what dates in the future I may run negative so I can plan ahead to adjust spending or bill payment dates. The loan tracking is very good, with automatic calculations for interest on amortized loans. That has always been accurate and useful for me.I do appreciate the cloud sync so I can access my Quicken data with the mobile app. I have not yet tested entering transaction with the app, so I cannot comment on how well two-way sync behaves. But being able to see where I stand and also having the app installed on my husband’s phone so he can see how we are doing is very nice.It is unfortunate that the issues are problematic enough to make me doubt whether or not I will renew, and migrating to a different software might be worth the pain. Given that this new developer has had control of Quicken since 2016, I feel that they have had plenty of time to mature past these issues and don’t have high hopes that they will get any better. My opinion as a decades-long user is that It just falls short and has gone downhill.Edit: after delving a bit into trying to get this program to be usable, I have learned a few things. This is an x86 single threaded application. My CPUs have 72 cores, but it only utilizes one and maxes out at a single core’s clock speed. One thing that has helped a little is to go to task manager and set the affinity for qw.exe to only use a few cores, and be sure to deselect core 0 (which windows already utilizes heavily). This must be done every time I start the application.I also completely disabled all cloud syncing. Every time I perform certain actions such as add an account, it automatically performs a sync which takes several minutes. When I get my file completely set up, I may re-enable cloud sync, but know that every sync takes well over a minute and it will interrupt you at times.Every time you open an account register or report, the previously opened ones remain as active windows in the background, which means that entering data causes recalculation on all of those windows. This is the reason restarting the application seems to help. You can also occasionally hammer CTRL+F4 to close background windows, but with no apparent way to tell that other registers are open in the background (aside from the back button being usable) and no “close” button on the register windows, it seems that this is a terrible design flaw.I had to turn off all animations in the preferences, and in Windows Control panel I had to create a setting for this application to use high performance graphics settings, just to make it able to scroll the register.I have also observed this application max out Windows’ limit of 10000 GDI objects, which indicates that there are some issues that the developers need to address. When an application hits this limit, it becomes unresponsive and will stop rendering menus and other interface objects. This requires force quitting the application and risking corruption on an already-fragile database. With 72 cores and 256GB of ram running from an NVME drive, there is no good reason a modern application with the current year in its title should perform so poorly on my PC. Especially when it is something as simple as a collection of checkbook registers. It is such a shame because I am facing losing a program that I have grown familiar with over the decades simply because the developers appear to be neglecting keeping it current.
