A great subwoofer amp to replace a blown subwoofer amp
A great amp to replace the blown amp in my powered Paradigm subwoofer. I initially rescued the subwoofer from the recycle center in town. Get it home, plug it in, connect to my system, nothing. The amp that was part of the subwoofer was unresponsive. My brother repairs electronics, sent it to him (the amp only), he couldn't get parts that were compatible, it got tossed. After a lot of research, I decided on the Dayton Audio, since it would give around 500 watts at 8 ohms. I had to modify the subwoofer enclosure to fit the amp. on the first system I hooked up, a pair of powered PSB powered speakers that had a subwoofer output, I did have some hum, but it did work good. I had an issue with my main system, speaker wire had to be repaired, definitely not average, run of the mill. It is Audio Envy SP13, and also new to the system is the SP14. I have bi wired my speakers for nearly 30 years. Both runs of the AE speaker wires I would put up against any Kimber, Audioquest, Cardas, you name it, for the money, the performance is OFF THE CHART. The amp running off of the dedicated subwoofer output signal from my NAD 165BEE pre-amp, and the subwoofer relocated to a different spot, I get ZERO hum. I don't have the volume maxed, and the subwoofer is only adding the lower bass, augmenting the 20-45 hz range. Well worth the money I had to spend, since I only had replace the amp, I ended up with a $1350 subwoofer for only $550, plus the mandatory tax. Great power, didn't take up a lot of room.

It's great for knocking things off the walls.
As long as you hook it up correctly this amp will make a set of 15 inch kickers slap. I love it so far. Going on a year of heavy use.

Hum makes it useless
Spent a lot of money on this amp, now have an expensive paperweight. As others mentioned, this amp suffers from horrible 60hz hum that cannot be resolved. I spent too long trying to remedy the issue on my end and now can’t return it. Now I have to pay to ship it in to get “investigated”. All other amps I’ve used besides Dayton work perfectly with minimal noise. If the hum wasn’t bad enough, it also pops loudly when turning on/off, which happens frequently due to poor input detection. Cannot recommend this amp at all, especially considering the significant cost.

Very Nice Features and Power
So I purchased this to replace my Klispch 115 SWR amplifier after it died. The difference is night and day as far as features, build quality, and power goes. I doubt the Klispch stuff makes more than 250w with lightening as a power supply. This SPA 1000 is definately worth the price at about .50 per watt. Not too mention the clipping protection, great EQ, and AB class with a massive Xformer. I actually threw the Klipsch woofers in the trash where they belong and installed Sundown subs. The house is now powered with 3 of these amps on Sundowns in Klipsch enclosures. What a difference!

Great product
Amp works great and was easy to install. It was a replacement for another plate amp that had gone bad after many years of service.

So this is what 1,000 Watts peak (into 8 ohms) sounds like
Very clean sound, with no clipping or distortion. The on-board equalizer eliminated my 15" Cerwin-Vega subwoofer enclosure's reverberation excellently. It cut only a very narrow frequency band to cancel out the excessive cabinet vibration. I thought a 1,000 Watt peak amp would be louder, but this amplifier & subwoofer combo still significantly outperform both of my 15" 3-way C-V floor-standing speakers, so I guess I should be content. The three-some sound fabulous together. Definately a strong 4 stars for this Dayton plate amp.

Great little plate amp.
I bought this to replace an 7 year old Dayton amp. They haven’t changed the design in that amount of time and I did not want to replace the box I built. It is a great little amp. The old one is as great also. It drives my 15 with no problems at all.

Horrendous "auto" mode that is completely unreliable
I am updating this as these amps are really frustrating, they often fail to "wake up" and they only offer "auto". There is no "on" and they don't have a 12V trigger, so it is really really really frustrating as they often just won't engage unless you crank the volume for a few seconds to "wake them" and then they work ok -- but then they also often fall into standby state if you have long "quiet periods" (or say you pause something for a bit). I will be replacing my entire subwoofer setup as these amps are just frustrating. -- original review -- I bought this to replace/upgrade a failed SPA500 that was ~10 years old in a direct to consumer integrated subwoofer. It was a drop in replacement, took me about 10 minutes and most of that was because I chose to use a hand screw driver rather than a drill for half of it. So far it works great, I don't know if I "needed" the upgrade who can say no when it was far cheaper than any new sub alternative. I could possibly fault Dayton for the fact that I have 2 SPA500 that failed, but maybe 10 years is all I can expect from a sub amp? Perhaps they are working too hard due to the wiring arrangement of my subs. They are powering 2 15" dual voice coil drivers in a sealed enclosure. It is hard to say, but I have two of the SPA500 had a failure that resulted in them just humming non-stop (and no, it wasn't due to ground loop) which isn't unheard of...but then what competitor exists remotely close to this price point? Hopefully the SPA1000 last longer than the 500 did, but it was still far cheaper than buying new subwoofers. I am sure the bass will be more intense with 2000W total driving my 4 15" subs when I install the 2nd amp in a week.
