It actually works without a computer.
While I have so far only used this device to transfer home movie's from PAL VHS tapes it actually worked straight out of the box. The unit is standalone with no computer required and has just a single button for start/stop control and that's the lot, so any adjustments need to be done in post. The unit also has two very small LED's, green to show the power is on and red to indicate its either recording (flashing red) or it isn't (steady red). I have yet to get it to work with a usb drive but micro SD works fine.I love it!

Could be unusable!
Works well recording individual clips (takes) of video and quality is acceptable (colour is good, resolution is similar to VHS recording). HOWEVER, if you try to record multiple video takes one after the other, it does not handle the breaks between them, loses the timing and only records the first one properly. You can't for example record even 20 seconds of video continuously, if this is made from four, 5-second takes. You need to record each take separately even if it's a few seconds long. I am guessing this could be some fault in the design and it is a shame really cause it's very simple to use product and quality is acceptable

Audio sync
The little box is easy to setup and get running, however it's a bit hit and miss.I tested this device on my VHS player, with very inconsistent results. For example, started recording a tape, recorded around 3 minutes. Stopped the recording.I let the tape run a bit before I hit the record button on the device again. Recorded another 2 minutes. When on the PC to check, the first recording was in 4:3 (correct aspect for the film that was on the tape) but then the second recording was in 16:9.Both started with good audio sync but about 30 seconds in, on both, the audio and visuals were out of sync quite a bit.Picture quality was exactly what was on the tv screen and so was the audio.I then tried another tape and the audio was very much out of sync. Then tried another and it was out of sync again.I've also tried formatting my USB stick, NTFS to FAT32 to exFAT.All three give different results and errors. One file supposedly had 2540 hours of recording!!N.B.This device will only be able to write on 64GB USB sticks or lower.Anything higher and it won't write to it.If you plan to watch the digital copies of your tapes on the computer then I'd suggest viewing it on something like VLC player, where you can slide the audio to synchronize with the picture. Can record tv channels too which seemed to be okay, but again aspect ratios are off.TV programme was 16:9 and the recording was 4:3.I have no idea how or why it flips back and forth between aspect ratios even when recording from the same source.Anyway, I think this best works on modern equipment like games consoles etc.Very hit and miss, more miss, with VHS players.

Sadly doesn't work
Oh I really don't like doing negative reviews, although there are quite a few, I took the chance and sadly they are right.Looks like it's going to be a great but of kit, it's very easy to use if only it worked.I tried using Fat32, NTFS, 2 memory sticks, and an sd card.Copying from VHS to the device, it just didn't work, it would copy to the sd card or usb stick, but when I inserted into my PC, and even tried to copy the files to my PC's HD the sound was out of sync, even usinf VLC, then it would just pause and get stuck, causing my PC to freeze. I tried, and tried some more, but no joy. Back it goes I'm afraid. Even with the files copied locally to my PC still no joy.Shame because it has the potential to be great, but not for me.

It works well and great results.
If you need to copy your home VHS and camcorder cassettes to digital mp4, this is the device for you! Very easy to set up, no computer needed. Tip: format a usb card or stick to FAT32 for best results. The maximum since USB device for this item is 64GB.

Does work, but with limitations
Micro USB card reader recognised the card but refused to write to it. Solution; Use the USB connector with a card reader stick to hold the memory cards. It now writes to the stick OK. Secondly, Unless your Video recording on the tape is good....all the way through, it will struggle to produce a good MP4 transfer that may or may not work on your computer/TV. You may not even be able to use editing sw to cut out bad sections. So it does work....with some limitations though. I have now finished with mine and it will be sold on.

Possibly a faulty item.
The product arrived well packed with clear instructions which we followed exactly as stated. However, following repeated attempts to get the unit working it consistently failed. The item was returned and Amazon made a full refund.

:)MfG

works to a certain degree
I tested first by copying few old 8mm Sony tapes to my win10 pc. I noticed that video grabber fails to show parts of video over hdmi and that recording introduced around 30 sec of grabble and in few tries a complete freeze of the recorded video. Smaller intervals of 5 min per file didn't help either. So I thought it could be corrupted tapes, but when I tried elgato it turned out tapes are 100 percent fine. I sent it back. My opinion is that amount of processing power and buffer is too small for my 90 min tapes.
