Powerful drawings, highly recommended
Entirely based on Shakespeare's fictional play, this manga comic is powerfully drawn and makes the villain stand out almost heroically in the end, which I think was the sort of infatuation with his evil character Shakespeare himself felt when he wrote his lines. Highly recommended, even if you are a Ricardian but can tell the play from the historical man.

Very dark
This book is the best of a wonderful series of Shakespeare manga adaptations. Although the text is necessarily heavily edited, it is a good introduction to the story, a chance to get to know the plot and the characters involved. It reads like a gothic novel, with a very dark Richard getting his just deserts at the end. The splendid drawings convey the noir atmosphere perfectly, matching the action very well indeed. If only Shakespeare had been this compelling when I was at school.

Inspiring artwork!
Unlike others, I did not pick up Richard III specifically for reading/studying the Shakespeare content! For me, the artwork was what truly made this book stand out. Illustrated by British manga artist Patrick Warren, his gothic style lends itself to the darkness of the book. Richard III is dynamic and imaginative, with a mixture of horror and humour, and remains always interesting. The characters were well designed and executed and page layouts were always kept compelling, with many of the pages being atmospheric and inspirational! I loved the sketchy style and bold graphics. Maybe not great for studying Shakespeare,(it could help to maybe understand on a basic level) but definately a feast for the eyes!

Fantastic manga art
Come on, who buys this for their Shakespeare GCSE? Go see the uncut play if thats what you want. Get this for the artwork, its fantastic. Great drawings by Patrick Warren, dark and brooding and full of menace just like the subject theyre illustrating. Superb characterisation and a really edgy feel had me turning every page. A must buy!
