A Remote Control Car for Those Who Prefer Dinosaurs to Cars!
Upon opening the box, I was surprised to discover not one but nine dinosaurs inside!Though not mentioned at all in the product description I read, the remote control Velociraptor comes with a pack of eight small dinosaurs (averaging around 9cms in length). These are very much children's play figures rather than museum quality, but nonetheless can be recognized (for the most part) without difficulty. They comprise Ceratosaurus, Baryonyx, Spinosaurus (daft 2014 reconstruction), Saltasaurus, Parasaurolophus, Tyrannosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus and Pteranodon (not strictly a dinosaur). This was a fun surprise bonus! The Velociraptor itself is approx. 45cms in length and accurate more to Jurassic Park than to the actual species. The arms are too long and the hind legs too short in relation to each other, but this is an unavoidable necessity due to the way the model moves. The paint scheme is subtle and naturalistic rather than being lurid and unrealistic, which is welcome. The eyes are very effective.(I would recommend ensuring that the model is fully charge via its USB cable before using for the first time).Though I have significant doubts that Velociraptor was bio-luminescent and lit its mouth up every time it uttered a sound, aside from the 'light-up mouth' feature, the movement of the model, when watched from any distance, is not too bad, though hardly to be considered absolutely life-like. The noises it emits are reasonably credible 'saurian vocalizations'.Though nothing like as fast as a Velociraptor, the model moves at a good little trot and should thus be used where it has a reasonably large expanse of floor to move on. This should ideally be as flat a floor as possible. It is prone to tripping over any lumps in the carpet. (But it will walk on flat, non-furry carpets). It also walks on a tarmac drive, except when it tripped over a twig. The remote control is very easy to master and you soon get a feel for when to make the model turn. This is, rather than being a scientific reconstruction, akin to a radio-control car toy - except it's one for those who prefer animals, dinosaurs specifically, and have no interest in cars. As with any independently mobile toy, it is best to get dogs used to it and ensure they do not try to attack it.All in all, especially with its surprise pack of little dinosaur figures - that aren't now very surprising because I've just said about them - this would make an excellent gift for any child with an interest in prehistory.
