There is a small drainage hole in the pots so if you put the plants directly into the kitty pots then yes they will drain onto the wood. I used a small size cup to put my plants into so that the cup would catch the water.

Yes the water can get the wood wet. What I did was to use the little plastic lids that come on the condiments at restaurants to put under the pots. It worked very well. It is very cute and my daughter likes them a lot because she likes cats.
