Japanese anime directed and co-written by Hayao Miyazaki. Lupin (voice of Yasuo Yamada) and Jigen (Kiyoshi Kobayashi), a pair of modern day Robin Hoods, realise that their latest haul of booty just happens to be counterfeit, and manage to trace the forgers to the tiny country of Cagliostro. They also discover that the evil Count of Cagliostro (Taro Ishida) has imprisoned a girl who knows the secrets to a marvellous treasure. The duo then join forces with the swordsman Goemon (Makio Inoue) and Interpol inspector Zenigata (Goro Naya) and plan an assault on the laser beam protected castle.

a refreshing change from robots, ninjas and demons
The Castle of Cagliostro is one of the earliest feature length films bought to us by the highly acclaimed director Hayao Miyazaki who has since produced titles such as Kiki's Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky and Spirited Away, for which he won an academy award for best animated film at last years oscars. For me Miyazaki is one of the most exciting anime directors because he is not afraid to try something new and unconventional. Most of the manga films that I have seen follow a formula which has become tiresome through a reliance on traditional devices such as martial arts, gore, violence, monsters, demons, robots and futuristic dystopias. However Miyazaki's themes, storylines and characters are imaginative and fresh and his films therefore broaden the scope of anime as a genre. In this particular film we are introduced to Wolf (alias Lupin lll) and his sidekick Jigen as they flee from the seen of their latest crime. When they realise that the money they've stolen is in fact counterfeit, they decide to investigate the source of the fake notes. When their inquiry leads them to the small country of Cagliostro they find an evil count with a castle and an army of guards, a princess who is being imprisoned by the count and the possibility of hidden treasure. The combination of the danger, the girl and the loot not to mention the counterfeit notes mystery, is enough to lure Wolf and Jigen who are joined by their samuri friend Goemon and femme fatale Fujico, into concocting a plan to infiltrate the castle and overthrow the count. The plot is exciting yet simple enough to ensure that you wont get lost, unlike other highly rated titles whose plots have been far too complicated for me, like Ghost in the Shell (maybe I'm stupid.) The animation is good, the script is witty making for a very funny film and the characters are well developed.Overall its an excellent film and a breath of fresh air if your collection is full of violent, futuristic titles. I think that manga lovers, manga virgins and even those who hate manga would enjoy this film. I am going to buy the next one in the series: the secret of mamo, for sure. buy this

Lupin is always fun
I have seen this version on the old VHS Australian Manga Version (Streamline). I was really happy to see that this copy was the old version I had grown up with. I know that in the 2000's Manga released the Castle of Cagliostro on DVD I wasn't to impressed with this Dub.Other wise it is a great purchest for any Lupin fan out there, quality of picture was good, both sound tracks in English & Japanese (English Subs) goodI do recommend to watch some of the TV series either Season 1 & Season 2 to understand the relationships between the chararters, I was new to Lupin when I first watched this and I had no idea how they were all connected as a Lupin fan now I really enjoy the chemistry between Lupin & Jigen. The sceen where their Fiat 500 blows a tyre and they have the Rock, Paper Scissors game to see who changes it is so classic of their chemistry even to the point where Lupin is smoking on top of the car while Jigen is jacking up the car.I have never found Lupin's interest in Clarisse all that beleavable but still cute.Other supporting charaters make the movie great from Fujiko to Zenigata.

Is the 4K worth it? Oh, yes!!
The film always was brilliant; now it sparkles on the screen.Wonderful colours, vibrant and clean. Really good sound, and subtitles are clear and timed perfectly. The 'dub' is only 'OK'; I'm sorry but, American/English voices just can't articulate the grunts , groans, and laughter of the characters with conviction.Lets pray for more Studio Ghibli on 4K.

Light Hearted Entertainment...
The first feature length animation by Hayao Miyazaki is as enjoyable if not more than some of his latest animations. The characters however aren't his own creations but first appeared in a manga by Monkey Punch (who took the ideas from various sources). Unlike his other animations this is very light hearted and somewhat unserious, a blend of action, lust and humour is evident as a Master Theif sets out to uncover the source of counterfeit money accompanied by his gun totting sidekick, a samurai and an action friendly woman. It is an enjoyable experience and the quality of the animation is good, especially for the time it was produced, fan of Hayao Miyazaki or not, this is certainly worth checking out, just don't expect it to be anything like his other work.

English dub is bad.
I'm an anime fan who lives in Japan. Please forgive me for my poor writing.I love to watch Japanese anime that has been dubbed into other languages.I saw a lot of great English-dubbed anime. It is, "Evangelion" "Puella Magi Madoka☆Magica" "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex "However, the English dub of "The Castle of Cagliostro " This is terrible.Characters' dialogue is different from the original script. In this dubbing of the Lupin name has been changed to Wolf.Lupin is called the boss to Jigen. However, Jigen is not a subordinate of Lupin.Lupin and Jigen is a partner. It is the same as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.English dubbing is ★ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆When you see this movie, please look at whether Japanese voice.

some beautiful animation and a refreshing take on the "princess trapped ...
It's an enjoyable movie, some beautiful animation and a refreshing take on the "princess trapped in a castle" trope we've gone through the past years. It did have a few faults and my copy didn't come with any kind of sleeve.

Great directorial debut from Miyazaki
This is Hayao Miyazaki's first film, before Studio Ghibli was formed and this was a great way to kick-start his career. Even though the animation does look slightly dated, the colour style and character design is really cool, the main character is memorable, the music is cool with the jazz undertones in certain scenes, the film is a lot of fun and the story itself is solid. I definitely recommend you check this out.
