Will this work as a normal windows mouse? the way the eraser head worked on older ibm laptops?

No. It will zoom and pan the contents of regular windows, but it won't move the mouse pointer.

How well does this work with Solidworks?

Very well, nice smooth work flow in control of moving the object in the 3D space.

Does this work with sketch?

I'm not specifically familiar with "sketch" but it's generic enough to work with everything at home and work. If your app needs 3D manipulation this is the best (only) thing out there. Once you use a 3D mouse, you can't live without it.

can it be used as a normal main mouse?

Not advised but technically it would probably work. This mouse is designed for precise 3D navigation and CAD applications, it would not work very well as a normal main mouse.
