Easy to set up, very quiet and efficient
Very easy to set up, very quiet on sleep mode, cannot be heard at all. It is in a bedroom that spent hours on red on the air quality monitor but later changed to blue, had better sleep last night. The size is okay and design looks good. I just set it on auto as it has an ambient light sensor that automatically changes to sleep mode when it gets dark in the room. Odour removal is also perfect. It is worth all the money.

Excellent for smoke, vape and dust
I'm very happy with this air purifier. I have a cat and it visibly picks up a lot of hair, that must just be floating around in the air; hair that would normally go unnoticed. I started using a Levoit LV-PUR 131 machine a couple of years ago to remove the smell of vaped marijuana flower (prescribed medical). I love the smell myself, but I know how many don't, and I'm a considerate neighbour. I've had the Winix for 3 months now, and it is far superior to the Levoit model, which has now been demoted to hallway duties. I like the washable pre-filter, although I've not actually had to wash it yet. I find that a good going over with a vacuum once a week, to remove all the large debris, is enough. I vacuum the charcoal filter too. As I've said, my primary reason for using an air purifier was never to remove dust but this is a big bonus, and there is visibly less dust now. The sensor detects VOCs much better than smoke, and for anyone using it for smoke or weed should be aware of this. I just keep it on setting three most of the time, which works very well for cigarette smoke and marijuana vape. Setting 3 on the Winix is quieter than setting 1 on the Levoit. Setting 3 is my "go to" setting. It's really not noisy at all. For smoke, leaving it on "auto" doesn't work, but manually setting it to 3 does. The same is true of marijuana flower vape. The turbo mode (4th speed) is VERY loud but unnecessary for normal use. I occasionally give it a blast, just to clear the air quickly, and it's very effective for this. I have a large living room, and 10 minutes on turbo will just clear anything quickly. The one niggle I have is that when I want to leave it on, as I retire to bed, I have a practical choice of setting 3 for 4 hours, or turbo for an hour - the timer does 1, 4 or 8 hours. It would be more useful for my purposes, if I could choose 1, 2, and 4 hours. Ideally, I'd like to be able to leave it on setting 3 for 2 hours, but that's not possible. I leave the Plasmawave mode on because on or off, I don't notice any difference. People have talked about it making occasional snapping noises, but I've never heard anything. Unbranded filter sets are about 20 quid, so in practice, I change them every two months. Winix say the charcoal filter will last for a lot longer as it is washable, but TBH washing and drying is too much faff for me. Lastly... it LOOKS better than the Levoit, which has turned yellow from UV light, like many white/off-white plastics. I'm very happy with this Winix machine. From research and experience, I now think that it's probably the best in the UK home market, for smoke and vape. [Update: Aug 25] I'm still very happy with the performance. I've discovered that because I've been smoking rollies (tobacco) near the unit, a sticky film develops on the pre-filter. In fact, the surrounding black plastic is also sticky. I think it's nicotine. Anyway, I just laid the filter down in the bath, and went gently over it with some water and a little washing up liquid. This did the trick. Good as new. Another trick I've found is that the carbon filter is exactly half the depth of the Hepa filter, so it is possible to fit three carbon filters, and no Hepa filter. Of course, from the POV of smoke and vape removal, this is not, as one might think, three times the effectiveness, but rather 197% the smoke-reducing power (according to ChatGPT) - something to do with layer passing. That's still almost twice as effective. It doesn't get the fine dust through, that's just blown back into the room. I use this air purifier in the room where I smoke and vape. Just around the corner, in my hallway, I have another Winix with a Hepa filter. That one gets the dust.

Purify your room with this beauty.
Having seen a few brands advertised on certain social media pages recently but as they were shouting at me (seeing them advertised everywhere), I wasn’t interested. Came across this beauty and instantly took an interest in it, especially with the PlasmaWave. Being in the healthcare profession as a frontline ambulance patient carer, this PlasmaWave may come in handy, if I bring home any unwanted viruses that become airborne. Very easy to setup. Was up and running in no time at all. Settings were easy to understand and straightforward. I left it on automatic and the indicator went straight to red. After an hour or so, it changed to blue but then, back to red but already, I could tell the difference in air quality. And for its size, really good at covering my small 10x10ft living room. It fits nicely in my living room, in which, I will locate it to my bedroom after a while. What is really impressive, is that, it was on fan 3 and I switched off my smart living room light and it went into sleep mode - all lights off and fan on one. It is very quiet and should be able to sleep soundly. As for odour removal, the air smells fresh with no lingering stagnant air. In a nutshell. This is an excellent Air Purifier and I am so glad that I purchased this one. Again, specifically for the PlasmaWave. Would I recommend it? 110%.

Decent machine, just misses a remote...
Upgraded for a smaller tabletop air purifier to this after reading reviews; can't say I'm disappointed. In my bedroom, I notice the difference fairly quickly in the air quality. In a larger space, it takes a little longer, but still produces good, noticeable results. It's quiet and effective, and easy to move between rooms. Particularly like that it automatically goes into sleep mode (runs quieter, despite already being quiet!) when it detects low light. It also automatically increases air flow when it detects particles; signalled by the blue light bar turning red. I first ran it with Plasmawave, but found it did produce an unusual odour; by no means unpleasant, just... different. Reading up on it, Plasmawave does produce small ozone emissions, so I typically just turn it off -- it works just fine without that feature running. The only thing is that Plasmawave is on by default when turning on the machine. Speaking of turning on the machine, the only thing this could have benefited from is a remote control. A small price to pay though, for an otherwise excellent air purifier. Filters seem to be reasonably priced compared to other makes and models of this size, but we'll see how that changes over time.

Good quality product.
I haven't had an air purifier before so , after a bit of research I purchased the WINIX 5500-2. And im pleasantly surprised, its a nice size and not that unpleasant to look at. As for performance and ease of use it seems to tick the boxes. It has 2 filters a partical filter and a very substantial active charcoal filter , the controls are easy to use on off switch with an auto setting and manual. In the auto setting the system monitors the air quality and controls the speed of the fan and coupled with the visual effect of the light which changes from blue to red when the quality of the air is low. There is also a light sensor so at night the fan drops to a low level and is wisper quite. I is very quiet on normal running which does increase when on maximum but not to a level that is disagreeable. The filters are supposed to last 12 months so I will update my review when required. All in all Im very happy with it .

Well worth the wait and money
Ordered one and I've no idea what happened as it arrived at the DPD warehouse and then I got an email saying they'd a problem.... Nobody could tell me what it was and it was eventually returned to Amazon without any attempts to deliver it and I was given a refund.... Had to order a second time and and order the extended 4 year warranty as this was cancelled too oluckily this time it arrived fine .... Unit works great and it cycles nicely on Auto Mode and we noticed a difference in living room in only one day of use noise on fan speed 1 to 3 is absolutely fine with no noticeable noise on 1 or 2 even with the TV off, 3 is a bit noiser but the TV masks it and 4 is quite noisy but again it's liveable and no worse than the noise from a fan and it only ever goes there on manual as in 2 weeks its never gone above 3 on Auto Mode .. The only downside is as it was sold with a remote control in the USA it has a sensor on it and when my wife switches the TV on/off the unit if it's on goes from Automatic Mode to full blown manual mode on no 4

Effective air purifier
I am very happy with this air purifier. I did a lot of research and this was recommended a lot online. Its quiet in sleep mode and on the lowest daytime setting there is a very faint fan sound, but it is in my opinion unintrusive. It is in my bedroom and I find my breathing is better and my nose is clear in the morning when I wake up, this is an improvement from before I had it on room. It is anecdotal and subjective but I feel there is an improvement. I never have the ioniser on either. It is large, larger than I expected but that is my fault for not checking measurements, so it's fairly substantial in the room, if you care about aesthetics perhaps looks else where as it is very utilitarian looking. I can't comment on power draw and any increase in electric bill as I don't have a smart meter. I leave it on most of the time and it's on over night as well. But overall I would recommend it, it's doing what I hoped and improving my night time breathing and nasal congestion.

Quiet, Elegant, and Noticeably Effective Air Purifier
After one month of use, I can definitely feel an improvement in the air quality in my apartment, even though I don’t run the purifier all day long. It is extremely quiet, which is a huge advantage, especially during the night or while working from home. I also really appreciate the automatic air quality detection — the purifier measures the air quality by itself and adjusts the fan speed accordingly, so there is no need to control it manually all the time. Another great feature is how easy it is to replace the filter. The cover is held in place by magnets, so removing it and changing the filter takes only a moment and feels very convenient. The black version looks very elegant and premium compared to many white air purifiers that often look cheap or too clinical. Overall, I am very satisfied with this purchase and would definitely recommend it.

The best you can buy
I bought this air purifier because I have two cats, I set it up in a room and let it run on the highest setting for 10 minutes and it removes so much cat hair and dust if you turn a ceiling fan on. It has a great little light bar that displays 3 colors, blue - orange and red. If you turn it on and it displays orange or red its probably best that you let the machine run until its atleast down in the blue, I recommend this for everyone.

Best Bang For Your Buck
I've been looking for a new air purifier for almost a year now, doing research here and there trying to find a unit that meets all the requirments I'm looking for. I need a unit that's for a larger room, has an auto feature, has good priced replacement filters, and looks good to match my home decor. A recent 80,000 acre fire hastened my research due to the thick blanket of smoke that blanket the area (and still is) every morning. With all things considered, the Winix 5500-2 met all my requiements. The unit arrived promptly and unpackaging was an ease. I literally had it set up ans running in about 5 minutes. The body is a hard, matte black plastic that feels sturdy and durable. The front panel is easy to remove, and secures to the unit via a clever magnetic clasp that is secure, yet simple to remove to access your prefilter for bi weekly cleaning and hepa/carbon filter replacement. There are 3 filters in total, and they fit snugly inside the filter chamber, amd ate secured in with the prefilter that snaps firmly into place. The control panel at the top is intuituve and user friendly. The buttons are clearly marked and visual ques explain what each button does taking out any guesswork as to what they do. A stylish indicator light bar runs along the bottom of the control panel indicating the level of air cleanliness with a 3 color scheme...green for clean, orange for okay, and red for bad. You can manually run the machine on 4 fan settings, or choose auto mode and let the machine choose the settings based on the data colected from the sensor. This means hands off operation. There's a night mode that will set the fan to its lowest setting to cut down on noise, and also dim all lights on the panel. This night mode will set automatically if you have the auto mode set on the unit, a light sensor will detect (or not detect) any light in the room and go into night mode. A filter change indicator light also is on the control panel. According to what i've researched, the hepa filter should last approx 1 year. It also comes with a remote control with a battery preinstalled. I dont plan on using it, but if that's your thing, it's there. This is the quietest air purifier I've ever owned. On level 1, it's almost undetectable, and even on level 4 turbo mode, it's no louder than a standing floor fan on high. This was a very pleasant surprise. It cleans the air well. I'm currently using it in my 350 sq ft bedroom. I don't have the equipment to test it, but per their website I should be getting at least 4 air changes per hour which is the amount of air exchanges you need for allergies and serious air purification. I've had no smoke smell AT ALL in the bedroom when I run this with the door shut to the rest of the home and it was initially startling to walk from the bedroom into the rest of the home after the first night of using it. This unit has more than exceeded my expecations ans meets all the things I was looking for in an air purifier. I plan on purchasing 2 more of these when money permits for my combined kitchen/dining/living room area that totals 700 sq ft. I can place these at opposite sides of the area and get more than ample coverage. I would highly reccomend this unit. For the price and the feature list, this just can't be beat. The cost is low, the replacement filters don't cost an arm and a leg, it covers a large area, and you get a lot of features. 09/28/2019 2 years later and this machine is STILL going strong. Besides the occasional vacuuming of the pre filter and the yearly filter changes, I've had this guy quietly working away in the house keeping my air clean. Can definitely say at this point that it's a durable machine! 08/20/2020 3 years later and still working! I'm only posting this update because I find myself in ANOTHER horrible fire season for California, and I'm in a zone getting insane amounts of smoke. Besides regular cleanings on the pre filter, and my yearly change out of the hepa and carbon filter, not much else to report. I really hadnt expected this thing to last this long as I run it 24/7, often on its highest setting to get maximum results. I own 2 now, I bought another one last year to get more coverage throughout the house. I would highly recommend this until to anyone. 01/03/2022 I was buying a new filter today on here and remembered that I actually had a review for this product. I've owned this air purifier for 5 years now. I just added 2 more photos (should be the last 2 in my string of pictures) just to show that I STILL own this device. 5 years of literal CONSTANT USE. I've had it set on the 3rd setting, just 1 below it's highest setting, for nearly this entire time. I have absolute confidence stating that this is a solid piece of machinery. I'm actually shocked that this guy hasn't given up on me yet! If you're worried about durability, at least in my case, yes, this is a very durable air purifier. Winix created a home run product with this one. I think that this may be my FINAL update on the product (unless of course it survives for 10 years, in which case I may throw a party for the thing!) ***I also want to add to those who say this device produces harmful amounts of ozone. That's simply not true. You can go to the California Air Resource Board, specifically to the section under California Certified Air Cleaning Devices. This will show you a list of air purifiers that have been tested by the state and produce under 0.050 ppm of ozone. This device, and all others from Winix, are on the list. That means that this device is at, or below, the levels indicated as safe. Make sure when reading reviews you guys do your own follow up research on an item. It's insane the amount of bad information that's out there! Dont take anyones word, look up what they claim!***

Owned since Nov 2021 —here’s my honest take
I have had zero issues with the general running of this air purifier. It is quiet, sounds a little quieter than your average fan, buttons and remote still work after years of daily use on Auto mode. I don’t use the Ozone light feature because of the negative effects that it can cause, but the fan running through the filter and the washable charcoal filter is more than enough. I just had a friend tell me my room smells ‘fresh.’ Multiple times. I also love how you can purchase refills (every 6 months) right here on Amazon and it came to my door within 2 days. Genuine HEPA filter and based on how it looks after its time is up, it catches all the dust and gross stuff you want it to. I live in an apartment building with ventilation issues, and this has changed the game with sleeping. I wake up in the morning without a dry throat! I feel better rested. This is a great deal for what it does. Just be prepared for the twice a year purchase of new filters, but that’s a given—they don’t last forever. The charcoal filter that’s washable is perfect to wash in the tub, dries fairly quickly. No complaints at all, 5 years and it’s going strong, all lights and buttons work. 100% recommend.
