can be used for both laser and inkjet printers? can be printed both sided? is it semi-glossy or satin finished or other?  Thanks in advance

I guess you would call it semi-glossy. I print on both sides with an inkjet printer very successfully. Love the paper for printing a newsletter. Since I do not have an 11x17 laser printer I do not print with laser. However, in a test, when I cut the paper in half, I found that my Samsung CLX-6200FX printed a full page picture so-so, but my older Samsung CLP-300 did not as well with toner not "sticking" to the paper in places. So, my Brother MFC-J6910DW inkjet works great, but my two lasers not as well.

Making my own planner: I'm looking for paper that I can use in my ink jet printer and then also write on with pen? Has anyone used this for writing?

We are graphic designers with kids. This paper is very versatile, we use it in primarily with our Canon color inkjet printers, for making brochures on high-end color laser printers, and for art with gel pens, high end color pencils, ink pens, art markers. The kids even use for watercolor with some warping. The brightness is good, and the ink absorption is excellent, this paper is not glossy, so the ink from inkjets printers or pens will not smear. The cover weights are also great.

does this paper print both sides without seeing the other sides print

You will not necessarily get bleed-through if you use this in an ink jet printer.  I print out my church's bulletins exclusively on this paper using an ink jet.  I use both graphics and print on two sides.  I set my HP printer on "draft" mode, suffer no loss of print or graphics resolution and save money by so doing.
