8696 Bushcraft, Field Knife with Black Nylon Sheath, Satin/Brown

I have owned this knife for about 2 years and it still is one of my favorites. The knife is robust enough to take some abuse and it holds a good edge without chipping or rolling. Did not come razor sharp, used my Landsky sharpener and now a surgeon can use it, its crazy sharp. Love love the flat grind, very easy to strop in the field. I have a medium sized hand and feel the handles are very comfortable. I highly recommend this knife, the price point is ridiculously cheap for a knife this good. The sheath is molle compatible and while its a little cheap, look at the price point...Ontario knife knocked this out of the park as far as I’m concerned. Minor gripe: The handles did not come perfectly fitted to the blade, they are slightly oversized, not sure what happened with machining/finishing but if you want to eliminate the difference, you would need to use a belt grinder and some stain. Not a problem for me however. I still strongly recommend this knife.

I bought this knife from Ontario Knife because they're known for making good solid knives. I own a few combat knives that I have used. So I decided to get into bushcraft knives. The wood handle is nice and comfortable and fits my hand well. I went for the high-carbon stainless steel blade over the regular high-carbon steel blade because of its resistance to rusting and easy cleaning. I am slightly disappointed, one of the bolts on the handle was loose. I managed to fix it by removing the other bolts and finding out that the screws are in different sizes and just repositioning them. The blade has a couple of very minute marks on the blade, you can see them when you angle the blade in the light. For a bushcraft knife, I thought that the blade would be a little thicker, but the blade does flex a little. The sheath is made out of nylon, decently made. There is a belt loop at the top, it can be mounted on Mollie gear, has a very small pouch on the front with a velcro flap, has two holes at the bottom so you can tie it to your leg, and has two straps to hold the knife in place. One is adjustable for the top of the handle and the second one that holds the knife in the sheath. One thing the sheath is slightly too long for the box so they squeezed it in the box, so the bottom end is bent. I am not sure if you can bend it back into shape and it will stay. You can try but you will not be able to store it back in the box if you do. Overall I am happy with the knife, minus a couple of disappointments. Even though it is supposed to be a bushcraft knife, I will not use it as one because of its thickness and the flexibility of the blade.

This is a very good budget American made fixed blade and the first OKC knife I have ever had. This fixed blade is decently big and has a good sized handle that is comfortable to handle when doing tasks like bushcraft or even some food prep work if you're into that thing. The drop point blade is long and decently pointy and the edge is pretty sharp out of the box but not the sharpest. The sheath is pretty straight forward but my top button doesn't seem to strap but my bottom button does and tights what secures the knife anyway so it is not a deal breaker at all to me. Overall very good for a 60 dollar blade that's made in the USA never the less.

I purchased this knife about a year ago and the knife I received does appear to be 5160 but Ontario’s website now lists this as 420HC which frankly is probably a better choice for this knife as it is not long or thick enough to be a chopper or heavy batoner. It’s ideal use is as a camp knife, particularly for food prep. The thin blade and full flat grind makes it ideal for slicing meat and vegetables and for that use a stainless steel blade would actually be preferable. Neither steel is great at holding an edge but both are easy to resharpen and 420HC is a tough steel as well so there’s no real advantage to 5160 for a knife of this size. Just be aware that if you are expecting a 5160 blade you will probably be disappointed. As far as the rest of the knife goes, mine had the usual poor fit and finish that, sadly, I have come to expect from Ontario in recent years. Honestly they are no better than Condor now but they still cost more. They have even switched to using 1075 now instead of 1095 for their RAT, Spec Plus and Old Hickory lines. The handles on mine had the usual raised lip along the tang which I immediately went to work on with sandpaper. Now it’s smooth and very comfortable. I have large hands so I do really appreciate the long handle of this knife. The other big complaint I have about this knife is the garbage sheath it comes with. This is where Condor has Ontario beat hands down. You get a nice leather sheath with most Condor knives while you get a garbage nylon sheath with most Ontario knives. I purchased a BPS brown leather sheath with a dangler here on Amazon and it fits this knife perfectly and is a huge improvement over the one that came with the knife.

I am very dissatisfied with the quality of attention to detail that went into this knife. I found myself in need of a new bush knife and have heard great things about OKC and the quality of their product. I am going out to the backcountry in one weeks time and decided to order this knife with hardly any time to spare. Upon receiving the knife I was immediately dissatisfied, as the set screws that hold the hand grips in place rattled and were loose due to the handgrip’s being carved too thin for the screws to tighten them fully. Furthermore the blade was not well honed and was extremely dull. Not having enough time to seek out other options I spent the next day shimming the hand grips, sanding, restaining, honing, and weather sealing the handle. Making for a terrible experience with my first (and probably last) OKC knife.

BUYER BEWARE. I purchased the knife and when I opened it up, the blade was warped, it had a significant bow. Returned the knife and was sent a replacement. Replacement knife also had a bow so I ended up returning it for a full refund. Blade quality was worse than my $10 kitchen knife. Buyer beware.
