John J. Collins's A Short Introduction to the Hebrew Bible is one of the most popular introductory textbooks in colleges and seminary classrooms. Enriched by decades of classroom teaching, it is aimed explicitly at motivated students, regardless of their previous exposure to the Bible or faith commitments. This more compact version of Collins's renowned Introduction to the Hebrew Bible is combined with even more student-friendly features, including charts, maps, photographs, chapter summaries, and bibliographies for further reading. Collins proceeds through the canon of the Old Testament and the Apocrypha, judiciously presenting the current state of historical, archaeological, and literary understanding of the biblical text, and engaging the student in questions of significance and interpretation for the contemporary world. The third edition is presented in a new and engaging format with new maps and images. An index has been added to the volume for the first time. Paid for new book, received used book.
The information in this introductory textbook is excellent, and I am reading it like a novel from front to back. Really interesting material. I was a little disappointed that I paid for a new book but received a used book. There are many pages with roughly drawn underlined pencil marks. Otherwise, the book was in very good condition. I recommend the book for its excellent content.

Introduction to the academic analysis of the Hebrew Bible
I have yet to read the entire book. However, the chapters that I have read were fantastic. The author provided an in-depth knowledge of the history and setting that surrounds the context of the Hebrew Bible without being overbearing and convoluted. It is appropriate for an introduction into the academic analysis of the text. I'm not too sure if this is enough for a theologian, though, but it is a fascinating read.
