This book was really helpful when planning my Japan trip. The information is easy to follow, and I found lots of useful tips for places to visit, food, and transportation. It’s a great guide to have before and during the trip.

Bought this guide as was traveling to Japan and found it quite helpful but the problem for me is the format.As much as I love buying guides to prepare my trips, I cannot pass by the fact that they are not practical, especially in big city’s. 1st you always need to double check every places they suggest as they might have closed, be on renovation, have regulated entries etc… 2nd it takes you to tourists spots and do not show you the way of a more “local” experience.Great tool the be part of you preps as it is easy to read and carry strong knowledge in tourism but I can only recommend to also use other tools as map apps, social medias, and to lose yourself in the places you are gonna visit !Have a great time in Japan, you’ll have a blast !

I really like this as a resource for Japanese destinations to travel to as well as history of city, people and culture. I find the Lonely Planet series of books wonderful.

I got this Japan travel book for our upcoming trip to Japan at first I wasn’t really digging it but the more I use it ! . I will bring this book with me to Japan !

Very helpful during my month traveling around Japan. I constantly referred to the Kindle version on my phone.

Has lots of good info but the organization is not super intuitive and the index is horrible. Hard to find something specific by looking up the index. Wish they had more itinerary suggests instead of just throwing stuff at the reader. It’s no Rick Steve’s

We just returned a few hours ago from a three-week trip to Japan--our first. We concentrated on the sites of Honshu (Tokyo, Kyoto, Hakone, Miyajima, Koya-san, Takayama, Kanazawa and more). As a loyal Lonely Planet reader, I was hesitant to purchase this latest edition before our departure, given the negative comments about the new format and its lack of solid information, etc. I'm here to say that this guidebook was GREAT--and was there for us every step of the way on our travels throughout the country. I understand why the people at LP have decided to dispense with opening and closing times and other such detailed info.--because in this day and age, who'd depend 100% on what a guidebook tells you about opening and closing times? I wouldn't--and didn't. With my Japanese Pocket wifi (rented in advance and picked up at the airport upon arrival) and my smartphone, I was always able to plan ahead by consulting a site's website (all available with English language option). LP has taken into consideration a modern-day traveler's needs and curiosity, as well as one's own speedy access to information, and come up with an intelligent, handy, and informative guide. Thank you!
