How strong are they? What's the recommended max voltage?

The coils are about a 28 AWG gauge. Voltage is not the concern, it will be how many Amps your circuit requires. Of course the combination dictates the power. I have put 48v through them with several Amps with minor heat. With out cooling they will carry 5 Amps without issue. The cores are iron. Well made, nice tight, uniform wind.

So to get the levitation to work, you need 4 coils, but you only sell 3 in a pack, why?

A marking scheme, I would speculate. A bit like the hot dogs and buns, never the same count, lol. A good coil, though.

Works, but hot with enough amperage

I hooked this up at 12V, 1.2A, and the magnetic field pulsed, most likely because it was overdrawing the power supply. I swapped power supplies to 12V 3A, and that solved my pulsing problem. The field strength isn't bad. It does however get QUITE hot after only a couple minutes.

Great for maker projects

Good product, I was able to tap the core out to use with a magnet pendulum project. Would by again to save the hassle of winding. If you are looking for a coil for an electromagnet project, these work fine.
