Beautifully illustrated book
Paul Roberts does an outstanding job of “bringing to life” fifty of the great monuments of Ancient Rome, many of which today exist only as shattered stone and brick. He does this by discussing and explicating the monuments in chronological order and using engravings, photographs and graphic reconstructions to illustrate how these buildings look today and how they may have looked when first completed. Highly recommended to anyone who has visited the ruins of Rome or plans to in the future.

Impressive Guide Book
Having previously visited many of the ancient sites of Rome this is comprehensive guide to many, if not all, of the 50 monuments seen. The inclusion of the emperors involved in creating the city and the buildings provides a fascinating perspective.Pity the book cover was damaged when placed in its packaging. Do I return the book? More care could have saved the cost of a replacement!

Ancient Rome discovered
I have always loved history including the Romans and have the book about Pompeii and Herculaneum from the same author for the British museum exhibition. It's fantastic.

Powerful, beautiful, best in class
A wonderful read, both informative and lively, as well as being the best collection of illustrations in possibly any book I have. Really helps you understand when and why these were built, as well as how history (mis)treated them. Loved it.

Beautiful book
This is a wonderful book, which introduces you to the people of Ancient Rome as much as its buildings. The text is really accessible and has been beautifully and lavishly illustrated, with wonderful reconstructions of how the buildings used to be as well as modern photographs of how they look now. It would be a great gift for anyone interested in the Romans.
