Great if you understand the English terms
This is a great book, but just be aware that since this book is from England, they use English terminology. This wasn't a problem for me as I learned these terms in music as a child overseas, but it could be confusing if you are used to American terminology. I just crossed out words like semibreve, crotchets, and quavers and penciled in the American counterparts before using the book with my son.

Superb! Simple and easy to understand!
If you are a musician who feels the need to know theory behind the music he plays, and would like to read and write stave notation, then this is where your journey should begin. The Grade 1 Workbook is a superb tool for learning. Simple, step by easy step it leads you forward, giving a clear understanding of the stave, time, pitch, note values, rests, key signatures, the Trebel and Bass clefs the diatonic major scales of C, F and, G, and more, all of which are demystified and explained in simple language. Go through the workbook diligently and you will be elated at the knowledge you acquired, and how easily that happened. You have started learning the language in which western music is written. However, if you are one of those people who are happy just playing music by ear and not keen to delve into the theory, or know how to read or write music, then this book is not for you.

A great book, easy to follow
This workbook is very clear and well set out. I am using it to teach my son who is 10. Although I have no great knowledge of music theory myself, the explanation are very clear and step by step which allows me to teach it myself saving lesson time. It helps to have a piano to try out and demonstrate the points. It'll be interesting to see how far we can get before I need to handover to a professional.
