Wow! Just WOW !
The first thing I did with this thing after charging it up was talk to a friend of mine that is six miles away from my house without using a repeater and using the stock antenna that it came with im super happy with this purchase! He said i was blowing his doors off with my transmission! We live in Northern Illinois so the landscape here is not flat at all we have hills and valleys as well as trees and buildings between us so this 6 mile test was not done on flat line of sight land. So for the money I wouldn't hesitate one bit! I liked it so much that I purchased a 10 watt version and did the same thing with it! I will be reviewing the 10 watt one as well. I'm not sure if it says the wattage on this particular unit but I did some research and it's a 5 watt unit. It is made of great quality materials doesn't feel cheap at all. It's programmable from the unit so you don't have to use chirp software. The speaker sounds great 👍 It's very customizable light color, sounds,Roger beep Ect.. (see the description) The charger base it came with is a great fit! It's not loose in the base at all . And the charger feels like quality materials as well. I don't know how they can sell these so cheap ? But don't let the price fool you these units are amazing for the price! Can you get a better radio? Absolutely. But you're going to pay for the name brand as well as the radio. I hope this helps. (I am not affiliated with baofeng. And I am not paid for this review. )

UV-21R, a UV-5R with some great upgrades
This is my third Baofeng radio, and as always, the quality is great. This is an upgraded version of the UV-5R. It is easy to program using CHIRP and a programming cable, or you have the option to program it manually. The sound quality is good, better than the UV-5R model. The larger screen makes it easy to read, however, it kind of fades out when you are in very bright sunlight. Since this model came with the upgraded 771 antennae, it does have better range than with the normal antennae. While testing the range, I got about a 3-4 mile range, testing it along with my UV-5R model with a few hills and trees in the line of sight. The battery life is solid on these radios, but if you want even better battery life, there is always the option to upgrade the battery to a larger one. I would highly recommend this radio.

great starter ham radio. two years later
I really like this handheld radio. the screen is easy to read, is easy to program manually, and feels very sturdy on the hand. battery life is good and the usb c charging option is phenomenal. has all the features you need to get you started on the VHF and UHF FM ham bands. it does 2 meters 1.25 meters and 70 centimeters. and that for under $30.00 is a win for me. 73 DE KD2JOY Update! 2026 Still loving this phenomenal radio! 2 years in and it still kicking butt. battery still keeping a charge like the first day and the type c port has been a kiss on the cheek. basic cheap and fun to use. and if it ever breaks, I'll just buy another one.

Seems good so far...
Pretty consistent with the power of 5-6w in the three ham bands and the MURS and GMRS bands. Display needs to be brighter and the font size needs to be bigger like the frequency display is. There's no reason for it to be smaller than the frequency fonts. The center button between the arrows should have been utilized in some way such as an OK button in the menu or maybe a reverse shift of the repeater you are using. Or even as a programmable button would be nice. As it is it's not used for anything. Can't testify about the battery life except for the first night I used it to play FM radio as I slept and that was out of the box and played with it and programming it and it lasted a good 18 hours. I am still cycling the battery in that manner for the first three times to get the best performance I can from the battery. Had to use the UV-17R Pro settings in Chirp to program it. Airband reception would be nice but not really a big deal for me since I have several scanners if I want to do that. The short antenna is junk and I recommend not using it if you want to be able to use your new radio for very long. The AR-771 that came with it seems to be ok even in the 1.25m band but it's not perfect. It's just OK meaning it's SWR in most of the bands were below 3 and mostly around 2 and lower. I like the ability to use the USB-C to charge it but it's not clear if you can use the faster charging that you can use on your phones like the 10W and higher chargers. It just says faster USB-C charging, so I take it as faster than the cradle charger but I don't find any maximum charging rate and don't really want to burn my house or car to the ground for a $25 radio. The audio both transmit and receive is pretty good. The programming on the fly is ok but could be better. Haven't tried the frequency cloning feature but it did pick up my base radio from inside the house correctly. I like the weather radio option but I would like to have seen an alert feature especially since I live in Tornado Alley. If I find anything that I need to update on I will edit this review.

Good product
Use at work in cold environment. Works well. Replaced the antenna to a soft one because I drop it often and the only issue is the antenna breaking

No need to get General or Extra, when you can have a nice Baofeng
This is a nice Baofeng. The batter lasts, and it is USB-C chargeable on the back of the batter itself. It comes with two antenna, which we all know the pet name for. The small one is 8 1/4 inches. The great one is 14 3/4. And it is great. Outside, I am reaching stronger repeaters that are elevated 25 miles at times. Almost all at 15 miles or less. And the price of this radio is incredible. I have not had a simplex contact on it, but I have tested it to other HT's I own. It's fine. Easily programmed in Chirp - but you have to select UV17Pro from the device list. It works on not only 2 meter and 70 cm, but also 1.25 meters. I have tested it simplex between another device that can receive with it. I have others that are said to be 8 and 5 watts in strength, but this one has a better form factor and I don't feel like I am having any trouble hitting the repeaters I want.

My Favorite, So far.
This is my favorite budget radio, which I own. I suggest you always buy your radios and sets of two. What I like most about this radio is the menu interaction and the buttons on the control panel. It's easy to manipulate without having to look directly at the control panel. You can use it by feel after a while. The simple up and down buttons, and the button placement are logical and intuitive. The price that I paid for a set of these radios makes this about a $25 radio, and it comes with headset, USB charger, a cradle charger and two antennas. It is a triband radio. It'll do 70 cm centimeter, 2 meter, which are the most common frequency sets that most people use. It purports to be a 6W radio, and it is a HAM radio, so you will need to be licensed to legally transmit. However, you can receive anything that this radio will pick up, legally
