I'm thrilled with its performance. From the moment I unboxed it, I could tell this was a quality piece of equipment, and it has certainly lived up to that first impression out on the water. The first thing that struck me is just how incredibly smooth this reel is. Casting is an absolute dream, with the line flowing effortlessly and consistently. The reel easy to use. This is a first impression review out of the box. I’m new to inshore fishing and wanted to get my hands on some salt rated gear for not a lot of money, and the kapstan does not disappoint. There are very few spots for water intrusion, and while it’s smooth, it doesn’t seem like there are too many bearings to get jammed up with corrosion down the line. This reel looks great, with its black and blue theme, and the packaging kept it safe to my door. I can’t wait to put it to work on some flounder and trout!

This is a great starter reel, lots of line capacity, performs well, and salt water safe. I pulled a lot of whiting and sting rays with this reel. But a few negatives would be that this reel is heavy, like crazy heavy, so i would recommend this be used for dead bait fishing from shore or a pier. There are a few Allen key screws that’s attached to a metal plate that connects the handle to the reel. These screws will come loose and you will feel the handle give a little creating a very small amount of latency between your push and the reel starting, so expect to have to tighten that down every season. For size it is big and hefty, much similar to your entry level PENN battle reels. I still feel that this reel does out perform the Battle III series and for sure does better than the Wrath series but that’s not saying a whole lot. If you’re looking for a heavy reel that is salt water safe but can’t afford a DX or go JDM and need a high drag? Then this is a decent choice. I did not notice any wild sounds or clicks after the 8 months I used this reel for primarily surf fishing pared with a St Croix Triumph 10’ cause at time I was looking for a reel, I was looking for something to match with the green rod and wasn’t really looking at the stats.

I've been a long-time KastKing customer. The quality of their products is excellent for the price. This reel performs extremely well. It is lightweight and easy to cast and reel in, and it's more than capable of handling larger fish thanks to its solid construction and 30 lb drag. Casting and reeling are buttery smooth. I believe this is my new favorite reel for saltwater fishing. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another one.

This reel is very smooth and built well. It will hold up to big redfish with no problem. The only complaint is the weight. I have the 3000 model and it weighs 13.8 oz. If you are using this reel for inshore fishing, I recommend getting their lighter models. I am going to use this reel for offshore snapper and bull red fishing so the weight does not matter for my application. For inshore bay fishing the reel should not weigh more then 6-7 oz. If everything goes well I will probably purchase some more for offshore fishing but go with the 5000 model for tarpon and large red snapper.

I purchased this reel out of curiosity about the quality and performance. I have not used it fishing yet but plan to in the next two weeks and will update my review at that time. The reel arrived on time and well packaged. It has a great look and feel to it with very smooth cranking and bail closure. It seems balanced and the finish is really nice. It is set up so it can be used for right or left handed cranking. One minor thing is that I travel a lot and wish it had an extra cover for where the crank handle attaches. This would protect it from dust and protect my gear from the grease if the handle is off of the reel. The reality is that I will travel with it in the box as it is set up to protect the reel! Once again, nice reel and I look forward to getting line on it next week and then getting out on the water to test it more thoroughly!

Caught the first false albacore of the trip with this reel. Drag was very smooth. Unfortunately the two machines screws holding the handle on the post came loose the first day. And they were star drive so no option on the water to tighten up. Looks like the assembler didn’t tighten or use enough lock tight. Hopefully now it will work great.
