Monstrous fun. Ahem.
More a Jet Jaguar flick than a Godzilla flick, but better only a bit of Godzilla than no Godzilla at all. (I get it that there are so many conflicting licensing agreements in so many jurisdictions that it's effectively preventing English-subtitled R2 Godzilla DVDs being made or distributed, but it's almost like there's active hostility somewhere to the idea of making these films available to UK audiences at all! Surely there's an opportunity there for some reputable UK-based DVD firm to import all the available R2 DVD /Region B Blu-ray Godzilla titles and make them available in the one place? Every one I've bought so far has come from a different country!)Plot's simple enough: various nuclear tests in the Pacific endanger the subterranean civ of Seatopia (descendents of survivors of lost continent of Mu) so the Seatopians unleash giant cockroach Daikaiju 'Megalon' against mankind in retaliation. Somehow the Seatopians learn about a robot being built by a young Japanese inventor (who to 2016 eyes appears to be living with his young son and another guy in some kind of early 1970s variant of a same-sex marriage). Seatopian agents steal the robot and reprogram it to guide Megalon against Japanese cities. Godzilla detects what's going on but it's a long way from Monster Island to Japan and it takes him a while to get there. In the meantime the robot, by now christened 'Jet Jaguar' by the inventor's son, has freed itself of Seatopian programming and aims to assist Godzilla in defeating Megalon. The Seatopians send word into space of their plight, and someone whose name sounded like 'Space Hunter' sends Gigan to assist Megalon...OK, maybe not so simple after all, but it's a lot of fun anayway! (Unless like me you're vaguely uneasy about the fact the Seatopians have had half their world destroyed by reckless nuclear tests but their actions are depicted as villainy rather than simply fighting back.)Highlights include: comedy pratfall by Anghillus in the opening sequence (though he needs to work on his technique); comedy double-take by Godzilla in same opening sequence; Jet Jaguar (a robot remember) getting dizzy and falling down after being spun around and around; the inventor sending his boyfriend and 9 year old, son on their own, up against murderous Seatopian spies armed only with a pebble and a toy aeroplane; and more!

and not just because I love Godzilla movies
its a no brainer that I give this 5 stars, and not just because I love Godzilla movies. this, despite the fact that it isn,t popular among fans of the series, happens to be one of my favourite Godzilla movies. yes, it does have its faults, in fact, 2 spring to mind, firstly, Jet Jaguer being able to program himself with the ability to increase size because it was convenient for the plot, and secondly, The Seatopians possessing the means to contact the aliens from the previous movie, when this is the first time in centuries they have had contact with anyone. as a result of this contact, Gigan makes an appearance, and it just feels shoehorned in. despite these minor niggles, its a great movie with some great Kaiju action, and I like how they take their time with it, rather than having all 4 characters duking it out straight away. it starts with Jet Jaguar taking on Megalon, before Gigan shows up and they both double team Jet Jaguar, until Godzilla shows up to make it a tag team affair. Godzilla and Jet Jaguar even shake hands when the fight is over, yes it may seem corny, but it all adds to the charm of it all

Godzilla and Jet Jaguar - bravo!
Love this movie - as I do all the Godzilla franchise. Of course, they are not for people who value logic or plausibility, but if you're a fan of bonkers stuff, they're a delight. This one features, among other nuttiness, Godzilla doing his long-distance 'flying drop kick', skidding along on his tail. It's great to have a 'proper' dvd of this hard-to-get movie at last. As another reviewer has said, it's a mystery why hardly any of Godzilla's English-dubbed or subtitled Toho movies have been released on Region 2; but I suppose its taking a bit of effort, makes completing one's collection even more satisfying in the end.

Ideal for a laugh or avid Godzilla fan
This film is hilarious. Me and my mate got a few beers and couldn't stop laughing. The action is bloody great, the costumes and characters are amazing. Who doesn't love a tag team match between monsters?!

The case is in German, but there is a sticker on the front saying you can set it to English. Haven't tried it, but the boyfriend has been after this one for ages so I hope it goes down well as part of his Christmas present! :)
