Why a “4.5-inch” speaker doesn’t actually look 4.5 inches Many people measure the visible cone of a speaker and find it smaller than the size advertised. For example, a “4.5-inch” woofer might measure around 3–3.5 inches if you place a ruler across the visible cone. This confusion comes from how speaker drivers are measured in the audio industry. 1️⃣ Driver diameter vs visible cone Manufacturers typically state the driver diameter, not the visible cone size. The driver diameter refers to the entire driver assembly, which includes: - the cone - the rubber surround - the mounting frame (basket) that sits behind the front panel. 2️⃣ Why the cone appears smaller Part of the driver assembly sits behind the speaker cabinet, so it cannot be measured from the front. The visible cone is therefore always smaller than the nominal driver size. 3️⃣ What the published size represents The stated size (for example, 3.5", 4.5", 5", etc.) is a nominal driver size used across the speaker industry and generally refers to the overall driver frame diameter, not just the cone surface area. Bottom line: If you measure only the visible cone, it will almost always appear smaller than the manufacturer’s specification. The published size refers to the driver assembly diameter, not the cone surface diameter. This measurement convention is commonly used across most loudspeaker brands.
