This is a novel closely based upon reality. As such, it gives real insight into the formation and early realities of China's Communist Party and its leaders. Good read as a novel and good read as history. Well worth it.

I loved the information, and Ha Jin’s writing

I am a great fan of Ha Jim’s work: Waiting, A Free Life, short stories. Alas, this is a dull plodding book absent Ha Jin’s usual compelling prose. Where was the editor?
