Radical Candor is the sweet spot between managers who are obnoxiously aggressive on the one side and ruinously empathetic on the other. It is about providing guidance, which involves a mix of praise as well as criticism, delivered to produce better results and help employees develop their skills and boundaries of success. Great bosses have a strong relationship with their employees, and Kim Scott has identified three simple principles for building better relationships with your employees: make it personal, get stuff done, and understand why it matters. Radical Candor offers a guide to those bewildered or exhausted by management, written for bosses and those who manage bosses. Drawing on years of first-hand experience, and distilled clearly to give actionable lessons to the reader, Radical Candor shows how to be successful while retaining your integrity and humanity. Radical Candor is the perfect handbook for those who are looking to find meaning in their job and create an environment where people both love their work, their colleagues and are motivated to strive to ever greater success. Poorly written, reads like a bad text book
I purchased this book based off of her conversation on NPR. I enjoyed her story-telling on radio, but her book is very poorly written. I have not reached the second chapter and have already decided to put the book down based on it reading like a textbook, spending too much time talking about what the book is going to talk about. If I purchase a book, you've already caught my eye. I don't need you attempting to sell the book to me as I'm reading it.

Looking forward to a second edition
Despite the 3 star review, I actually really liked this book. I had been looking forward to reading it for a while. The issue I had with the book can be illustrated by her performance|growth model. She spends a lot of time talking about the extremes but hardly any time talking about managing the middle, which is where probably 80% of managers really struggle with their direct reports!! I kept going back and scanning the pages again, thinking that I missed it. I could see a whole other book about that particular piece, and hopefully Scott will explore it further in a second edition. There were other similar gaps like that in the book - parts that I felt were explained so well at the extremes but things left unexplored, for example: companies whose culture is somewhere in the middle, managers who are dealing with performance in the middle, team dynamics somewhere in the middle. That "middle" is the tough part - how do you use Radical Candor to know when to pull the trigger on what when you're in a gray zone?

Finally something that made sense to me about management!
Easy to follow. Read it first with audiobook, but holding and paging through the book is better for reviewing, looking up stuff, and checking the diagrams.

Concreto, utile e prospettico
