Just right for an old 3lbs sledge
I have a 60 yr old 3lbs sledge and this fit the oval opening very well. Had to use a medium rasp to get the top of the handle shaped to allow it to be bumped thru the head and wedged in place (thank you for including a new wedge BTW).

It actually looks to be hickory.
It looks to be hickory but of a lesser than top quality. For my purposes it will work fine. The grain is straight and should not be likely to break with hard use. (as though that will happen with me). : ) If however I was John Henry I would probably look up the "craftsman" who made and finished this handle. Substandard work but as I said it will work for me. Probably outlast three of me. If you need a handle for routine work, get one. And it comes with a metal and a wooden wedge. The cut for the wedge is at an angle in the end. Sloppy indeed.

Eye depth
The eye size was indeed oval 1 inch x 1.25 inch, and a depth of 2.25 inch. I wasn't sure what the depth would be from the picture, but that worked exactly right for my short-handled sledghammer/engineer's hammer. Your situation may vary, but the handle seated at a depth of 2.25 inches. It included both the neccesary wooden and metal wedges. (Find some instructional videos if you have never done a handle replacement before.)

The head is a hair more than 1 1/4 inches... Significantly larger than my old sledge...
I expect I will have to spend an hour to get this handle on and secure. The hand sledge I need this for has to be over a hundred years old. The handle was dried out and cracked. The hole for the handle is somewhat uneven and a bit under 1". I made no progress after 5 minutes with sandpaper. . So, I will need to drag out my belt sander... The finish is a bit rough. That is ok as I am in the middle of refinishing all my old wood handled lawn and garden tools anyhow.
