The Little Book of Black Holes (Science Essentials)

As someone that has never spent time studying astronomy or astrophysics (I only recently got into astronomy.) I definitely was challenged while reading this. Likely will have to re-read several sections or even chapters to help better comprehend what I was reading. Nonetheless, I still was able to take away some basic understanding through some thought experiments and the authors speaking simply on occasion. Definitely worth my time and money!

In comparison with the author’s other work, Little Book of String Theory, this is much more readable and approachable. Details of both Schwarzchild and Kerr (rotating) singularities are presented with some interesting implications. Not math heavy, but not absent of rigor (the basics of Einstein’s special and general relativity are presented, with many well-grounded thought experiments). As a PhD but non-physicist, it did not leave me feeling like I was reading a “popular science” description of black hole mechanics. Fascinating material and worth more than one read-through.

Overall it was in good condition. No dents, scratches, or tears; However, it did have a lot of dirty, dark streaks all over the front and back covers. Still very happy to have this book :^)

Very good complement reading for all the people that liked Brief History of Time

Excellent thorough and very readable introduction to a fascinating topic. Tragically the author died in a mountain climbing accident two years after publication. The author also wrote "The little book of string theory" in 2010. It is also excellent

Goes much further in explaining black holes and the phenomenon around them than more 'popular' books on the subject. Couple of highlights1. Actually gives you an overview of how the relativity equations work - these are more complex than you think but without going into endless detail they give you a good flavour2. Deals with all the 'weird' phenomena - time running backwards, why that black hole photo looks the way it does etc.Basically this is more in-depth while still being accessible.

The book gave immense value to mum-in-law who needed to catch-up on her science since working as a geologist internationally. A fascination with Black Holes made this an ideal choice. 2 to 3 readings got the maths sorted in her head. It stays by her bookpile for continued dipping-into.

Scientific book not everybodies cup of tea.
