Can't wait to experience them for myself!
This book opened up a whole new world of fascinating drinking establishments that make me want to plan a visit just to experience their eccentricities (and believe them!) for myself. The character of the pubs and their atmospheric stories just ooze from the pages, I couldn't wait to read on to the next. I loved the tales of the medieval killer landlord who dispatched his guests with a tilting bed, and the pub with three witches circles drawn to ward off evil spirits. There are hidden pubs, tiny pubs, those with fabulous neon signs or a mummified cat. There are former cinemas or post offices, and Victorian pubs with private drinking boxes where gentlemen could drink separately from their servants.Histories sit alongside photos to give you a sense of the unique character of each establishment. Tips on how to arrive or accompany visits with a walk, cycle or even a boat trip make this book a great source of inspiration for the most unusual and unexpected pub crawl you've ever experienced...

Quaffing amongst the quirks
An invaluable addition to the endlessly fascinating story of Britain's drinking establishments. One of its joys is flicking through the pages and experiencing that "I've been there!" moment of recognition. Even more fun is the "I fancy going there!" expectation. Some of the south-east England references in the gazetteer section (the cherry tree within Ye Old Mitre; the crackling fire beneath the window at The White Cross; canal-side reveries at 'The Riser') brought back fond memories, while the author's journeys to the nooks and crannies of the country whet the appetite for future discovery. The descriptions of how to get to each pub, whether by foot, cycle or water, are precise and sensible, and it's great not to be told, for once, the best way to snarl up the approach by car. At a time when more and more pubs are closing, here's a rallying call to get out and discover the many that are worth embracing not just for the ale, but also for their inherent quirks and specialness.
