Could this light be used horizontally, e.g. above a door?

YES - MY LAMP SITS HORIZONTAL TO THE DOOR IN THE PORCH CEILING AT FRONT DOOR. WORKS PERFECTLY AND I USED EXISTING WIRING TO OLD LAMP.

can this light be wired to use with an on off switch as well as the sensor?

Yes mine is ...although I had to get an electrician to do it in the end ..very fiddly to wire up and not a lot of space inside

Having taken the cover off to install the bulb I just cannot click it back in place. Has anyone else found this, is there a knack tat I'm missing?

I found the same problem after looking at this for a while I inserted the left hand tags into the light first pulling the cover over to the right were the tags insert using a small flat blade ie screwdriver as you push the cover firmly insert the screwdriver next to the tag the small gap were the screwdriver has made the tag will now click into place top first then bottom second hope this helps

Can I put a standerd plug on this with a 3 core cable.

Yes you can, fit a 5A fuse to the plug.
