I Love The Ingenuity Behind This Clever Mouse Pen
I purchased this mouse pen after seeing it featured in an online article that listed new and "necessary" gadgets that were phone or computer-related. I saw the pen, and being a huge computer geek that often gestures at the screen more than most, I had to buy it and see if it felt as good to use as it looked. Let me tell you, it is a HUGE improvement over a traditionally-shaped mouse. There are a ton of benefits I have found to using this pen - and a few downsides - but I would certainly recommend this pen to someone with carpal tunnel or arthritis as it puts less pressure on your hand to use it than a traditional mouse. The benefits of this mouse and its features are quite impressive. It comes with a red USB dongle that makes it "plug and play" ready, just insert the dongle to your USB drive and set up the mouse. There is a bit of a learning curve to this mouse pen, but let me help break it down for you. First, you will need one AAA battery - I *highly* recommend using a rechargeable battery for this mouse as it can really drain batteries. Once inserting the AAA battery in the correct position (positive terminal toward the end of the pen), locate the tiny black switch on the side that turns the mouse OFF and ON. It's the smallest switch on the mouse and the only one in black, so once you locate that switch, that turns the mouse off and on again. I also highly recommend first turning the mouse OFF by this switch before opening the battery compartment and changing the battery) and then turning it back on once you have placed the battery securely in the pen's battery compartment and covered it with the snap-on black cap.Be aware that the battery compartment on these seems to be quite sensitive - that is to say, make sure the battery doesn't come loose, or you will find the mouse going in and out on you. If you find the mouse is not moving well, check the battery, especially making sure it is fully in place, and that the tip of the pen that touches the mousepad is clean (use a cotton swab dipped in alcohol to gently clean the tip of the pen every so often to keep it from becoming covered with any dirt from your mousepad.Speaking of mousepads, this mouse pen will work well on just about any smooth surface, but if you want it to work smoothly and seamlessly, you will need to use an actual mousepad. It works - sort of - on the surface of my couch, my pants, etc., but it jumps around a lot that way and I recommend just using a normal mousepad as you can see in my photos of the mouse pen.Again, there is a slight learning curve. It will take a few days for your fingers to memorize where the new buttons are and the scroller - HOWEVER, once your brain figures it out, it becomes second nature, just like using an ordinary traditional mouse, but BETTER!!! This pen mouse is SO much more ergonomic and lightweight than a traditional mouse, and so much easier to use with much more freedom to move. I absolutely adore this mouse pen, and I am glad I purchased it! I've used it for over a month now with no problems and it's something I couldn't live without anymore. I'd definitely recommend this mouse pen to others - once you use it you will never want to use a traditional mouse again!

critical review of pen vs mouse
Critical reviewFor typers, I prefer my traditional mouse that is simply right there ready to use without having to pick up a pen.For graphics, while this will not draw or trace better than a traditional mouse it is both allot more natural to use and because of that allot more accurate. Grabbing lines and joining vector points is a breeze and allot more controllable. For that, it's worth every dime. Buttons are right where they need to be. Paintbrush, airbrush, grabbing pixels...you definitely want to try this. For readers, researchers...It will be a personal choice. I personally loved just grabbing and scrolling with this.I miss-typed a word while writing this, a traditional mouse would sitting right here, left click and done to correct. Picking up a pen, sometimes having to turn it back on because it times out...not at all convenient unless you are on a laptop and using the built in mouse or using 2 mouses.I don't know how long this will last. I have read those reviews. I figured for $10, it was worth trying. For me, because I do use graphics programs, if it doesn't last, I will buy a higher grade one.

A different way to get around
I like the Optical Pen Mouse Smart Mouse for my computer. I am a frequent Photoshop User who hasn't quite mastered the wacom tablet. Their pens are too small and tire my hand out. This Pen is larger and more comfortable in my hand. I don't use it all the time, but it's great for fine tuning in PS. A nice addition to my workflow.

Great value for the product
I bought 5 of these about 3 months ago. They all work great. I've gotten quite accustomed to the unconventional method of mousing with these things. After daily use of all the units, only one of them had a mouse wheel that quit scrolling. Other than that, great product.

handy for drawing on screen
By no means good for fine art, but much better than a regular mouse for annotating slides in real time.
