Alpha 7 III Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera (24.2MP, 4K Video, Fast 0.02s 693 Point Hybrid AF & 5 Axis stabilisation - Ideal for Enthusiasts, Hybrid Shooter and Low Light imaging)

This is a long term review, so I've had the camera for around 4 years now, and think it's about time I put pen to paper. My review is broken down as follows: Features & Functions, Build Quality & Weight, Menu System, Speed, Accuracy, Image Quality, 3rd Party Lenses / Add-ons & then Final Thoughts. Build Quality: Very solid build quality, with magnesium alloy and weather sealing, which does make the camera slightly heaving than I'd like, but easily fixed with the free heavy-duty camera strap in the box that Sony nicely provide. Full Frame: When I purchased the camera, the cost was around £1699, but now, the price is close to £1000. At this price, a full-frame camera is a steal, especially this Sony A7 III. Image Quality: As you'd expect from a FF sensor, image quality is amazing, as is low light capability. Choose to save images as RAW or JPG or RAW & JPG. Images can be saved on either or both SD cards - see 'Dual card slot' functionality. Dynamic Range: The dynamic range saved within the RAW images is amazing - I've saved many images that appeared lost is complete darkness, only to be save-able with boosting shadows and exposure. So, be sure to save images as RAW (and JPG if you need to). Speed/Accuracy + Auto-Focus: 693 phase-detection AF points and 425 contrast-detection AF points means that auto-focus speed and accuracy is second to none. Sony cameras are the de-facto standard for blazing auto-focus speeds. AF Touch Tracking: To help with auto-focus, you can also tap on the touch-LCD to track a subject - the tracking is fairly sticky. Eye AF: Another amazing feature is Eye Auto-Focus which if amazingly fast - the eye will stay in focus as long as it's visible. The AF-ON button also switches autofocus on without half pressing the shutter button. Shooting Speed: Very fast 10 fps with AF/AE tracking in continuous shooting mode. 4K Movies: Very clear 4K videos up to 60 fps (or 50 fps depending on region setting). Up to 120 fps in 1080p for slow-motion recording. S-Log3 + Other Grading Formats: To allow you to capture dynamic range in movies. Movie Auto-Focus: Tracks smoothly during movie recording. AF tracking sensitivity can also be tuned for movies to either slow of fast/responsive. Decent menu interface: Not as modern as I'd like, but still a decent menu/interface once you get used to it with easily addable 6-pages of favourite items. Also includes a customisable FN ket to allow access to quick functions. Huge amount of customisable buttons and functions: Honestly, you're literally spoilt for customisable choice with 4 buttons for full customisation, two big wheels/dials, one back wheel/dial, 4-direction buttons which are all customisable, the FN key, the AF-ON, the Eye AF Key, all customisable. And a menu key. Tiltable LCD touch screen: OK ish LCD screen, could be better in terms of PPI, but decent enough to view. Really annoying that it's not a fully rotating screen for selfies and VLogging. Touch operations for touch-to-focus or track. Could be brighter in sunny weather. Viewfinder: Nice viewfinder with similar display functions to LCD. Again, could be brighter in sunny weather. In-body 5-axis image stabilisation: With 5.0-stop shutter speed advantage which has allowed me to get clear hand-held shots down to 1/20th sec. Easily share: Connect and share with phone with direct WIFI access which is pretty fast. Obviously, depends on the speed of the SC-Card from where the images are accessed. PC Tethering: With USB cable which allows direct connection and image capture on PC which works really well. Amazing battery life: Honestly, battery life is a tank! It just keeps running all day long. I do switch off the camera in between shots though, and therefore, batter does last a lot longer. I have also set the battery saver / standby mode which also saves battery. Dual card slots: One card slot it UHS-II and the other is UHS-I. UHS-II card slot is v.fast - I use this card slot to save RAW file as the RAW files (around 25MB each) are much larger than the JPG files (around 15MB each). As mentioned above, I can split the saving of RAW and JPG files however I want, so lots of options for me to choose from. Hot-Shoe expandability: Which I have used for external flashes and works very well and v.sturdy. Lots of other functions: Including Slow and Quick Motion, simultaneous proxy movie recording, extraction and separate storage of a still from a movie, and Gamma Display Assist function, among others. Lenses & 3rd Party Support: 3rd Party support is huge with a full range of amazing lenses from Tamron and Sigma. I have used the full range of Tamron lenses to cover from 17mm right the way through to 300mm focal ranges, and they are tack-sharp lenses comparable to the much more expensive Sony counterparts. Final Thoughts: This camera went on sale on Amazon for £999 a few months ago then even dropped to around £949 - I was seriously thinking of re-purchasing due to how much of an amazing deal that it was - you get a lot of camera for that price. I'd happily recommend this camera to anyone looking for their first full-frame adventure, but also considering using the A7 III in a professional capacity, as it has served me very well in both areas.

This camera was bought by me and it is extremely professional. It takes a lot of time to learn it due to it's extremely high wuality features, but that said it is meant to be used by professional photographer. I got this camera as a beginner where after a few weeks i realised it can be overwhelming and a bit 'too much' for me. It is shooting absolutely brilliant sharp and extremely high wuality pictures and if you decide to go with it it will make you look like a professional even if you never had a camera in your hands.

I've recently upgraded from the A6000, to the A7ii and now the A7iii. I'm not disappointed - Low light capabilities are second to none, and is heaps better than the previous A7ii. The focus points are much more accurate and quicker than previous models too. AF tracking works great on moving objects and the overall feel of the camera is great. Recording videos is also something I enjoy doing and have recorded using various lenses and have had no issues recording in 4k. Being part of the Wildlife Trust, in my spare time enjoy taking photos, both MACRO and ZOOM, this camera delivers in all areas. I've attached a few photos I've taken to look at (compression may be an issue, but gives you an idea nonetheless). The battery life is incredible compared to the A6000 and A7ii. Instead of hauling 7 batteries around with me, I now have 3 and have only needed to swap batteries once in the 2 months of having it. Great improvement and much needed. Overall, extremely good quality photos taken with an extremely good camera, and I couldn't be happier with it.

I've had this now for several months and used it in the Canadian Rockies (for landscapes) and at a family function (for portraits). This camera is simply awesome. Firstly, picture quality (mostly down to the lens) but the sensor is professional grade and takes amazing pictures. Secondly, the image stabilization. I took a picture of a lighthouse from a speeding boat and it was pin sharp. On other occasions where I would normally use a tripod, I don't need to. Yes, it is slightly heavy but much less than the equivalent Nikon. The buttons and menu systems are sensibly laid out. I absolutely love the three 'custom' buttons that allow you to switch things like focus mode very quickly without invoking the main menu. I am not a professional but when asked what camera I had by a professional in his gallery in Banff he said "oh, I use that one too".

Dont really want to take a chance on warehouse cameras, glad i did though as this is mint like new box contents un touched, the camera has only done 1160 clicks. There is not but a mark on it or screen. Stunning quality.

Ho acquistato la Sony Alpha 7 III dopo aver valutato a lungo diverse mirrorless full frame, e posso dire che è stata una scelta azzeccata. Anche se non è l’ultimo modello uscito, rimane una fotocamera estremamente valida sotto tutti i punti di vista. La qualità d’immagine è eccellente: il sensore full frame restituisce foto molto dettagliate, con una gamma dinamica ampia e ottime prestazioni anche ad alti ISO. I file sono puliti e lavorabili, sia in JPEG che soprattutto in RAW. L’autofocus è uno dei suoi punti forti: rapido, preciso e affidabile, con Eye AF che funziona davvero bene sia per persone che per animali. Per fotografia di ritratto, eventi o street è una sicurezza. Molto buona anche lato video: il 4K è nitido e stabile, perfetto per chi fa contenuti, interviste o video promozionali. La stabilizzazione interna aiuta parecchio anche a mano libera. Costruzione solida, batteria che dura finalmente tanto (rispetto a modelli precedenti) e un’ergonomia che migliora con l’uso. I menu Sony non sono i più intuitivi all’inizio, ma una volta configurati diventano gestibili senza problemi. In conclusione, una fotocamera versatile, affidabile e professionale, adatta sia a chi vuole fare un salto di qualità sia a chi lavora già nel settore. A questo prezzo, difficile chiedere di meglio.

J'ai décidé de remplacer mon Canon 80D par ce Sony A7III et honnêtement je ne pensais pas que la claque serait aussi terrible. Je ne suis absolument pas déçu. Je shoot beaucoup d'événements sportifs, souvent en basses lumières, donc il me faut un bon AF et une bonne montée en ISO et ce Sony rempli parfaitement le job. Je peux monter sans soucis jusqu'à 6400 ISO et avoir des images propres. A 12800, c'est toujours exploitable mais ça devient limite. L'AF quant à lui est fabuleux. Même en faible luminosité je n'ai aucun soucis a accrocher mon sujet. L'eye-Af (ou le suivi le l'oeil) fonctionne à merveille, franchement il devient difficile de manquer sa mise au point avec ce boitier. Un autre point fort de ce boitier est son paramétrage à outrance. On peut configurer quasi chaque bouton comme on le souhaite pour chaque mode différent (photo, vidéo, review de photos...). Très pratique. On peut également créer son propre menu "mymenu" avec les options de notre choix. Ca prend du temps à configurer mais une fois que c'est fait, il n'y a quasi plus besoin de retourner dans tous les menus Sony. L'écran et le viseur électronique sont aussi excellent. Quel bonheur de prévisualiser exactement sa photo avant même la prise de vue. Ce boitier a tout de même quelques petits points faibles (nul n'est parfait) : - L'écran n'est pas totalement tactile. On ne peut toujours pas naviguer dans les menus via le tactile, dommage. - L'écran encore lui, ne pivote pas totalement. Pour les prises de vues au ras-du-sol en portrait, c'est peu pratique. - Les caches des différents ports sur le coté du boitier n'ont pas l'air solides. A voir sur la durée. - Un point qui ne concerne pas vraiment le boitier : Les objectifs Sony sont très (trop) chers. Bref malgré ces petits défauts, perso je prends mon pied à utiliser ce boitier. La qualité d'image est clairement au rendez-vous. Je recommande vivement !

DSLR hat ausgedient, Leute. Das war‘s. Das sage ich euch als langjähriger DSLR Nutzer. Mit der A7III hat Sony ein Produkt rausgebracht, dass das Schicksal der DSLR im mittleren Preissegment endgültig besiegelt. Für 2300€ bekommt man hier ein ganzes Stückchen highend Technik. Die Kamera kann fast alles außer Kochen und Staubsaugen. Spaß beiseite. Ich erwähne stichpunktartig, was sie aus meiner Sicht besonders hochwertig macht: - Augen-AF ist eine enorme Erleichterung für einen Fotografen. Die Kamera klebt einfach am Auge und trifft es fast immer auf den Punkt. Es gibt Einschränkungen, wo der Augen-AF manchmal Schwierigkeiten hat, aber in 80-90% der Fälle kann man damit super Ergebnisse erzielen und zwar ohne dauernd den AF-Punkt wie bei einer DSLR verschieben zu müssen. Wer mit dem Augen-AF ein paar Tage lang gearbeitet hat, wird nicht mehr zurück wollen, ist einfach so. - Autofokus ist sehr schnell und zuverlässig, vom Tempo her mindestens auf dem Niveau einer guten DSLR. Von der Genauigkeit her liegt die Sony sogar vorne, Ausschuss gibt es fast nicht (Ausnahme sind schnelle Bewegungen in Serienbildmodus, hier ist die A9 nach wie vor unangefochten). Bei Dunkelheit ist die A7III genau so wie die anderen beiden Sonys jeder DSLR überlegen. Sie fokussiert hier deutlich genauer. - die Abdeckung mit Autofokusfelder ist gegenüber jeder Vollformat-DSLR eine Offenbarung. Man kann quasi bis an den Rand den schnellen Autofokus nutzen. - die neue „Z“ Batterie ist ein gewaltiger Sprung in richtige Richtung. Ich kann teilweise bis zu einem halben Tag mit der Kamera rumlaufen (Dauerbetrieb) und erst dann geht der Akku in die Knien. - die In-Body-Image-Stabilisation (IBIS, auf Sony Sprache „Steady Shot“) macht das Arbeiten deutlich entspannter. Man kann Bilder freihand machen, bis in die Abendstunden hinein. Bei Video ist der IBIS sowieso Gold wert, weil das Video damit viel ruhiger wird (Händezittern wird deutlich reduziert). - IBIS gepaart mit der sehr guten ISO Leistung macht das Fotografieren einfacher. Das Rauschen liegt in etwa auf dem Niveau einer Nikon D750, eventuell minimal besser. - die Konfigurationsmöglichkeiten sind fast unendlich. Man kann wirklich fast jede Taste mit einer Funktion belegen, die man braucht. Ein enormer Sprung gegenüber DSLR und ihrer sehr überschaubaren Möglichkeiten - Silent Mode, also lautlose Auslösung eröffnet einem neue Möglichkeiten der Fotografie. Fotografieren unbemerkt, ohne Klacken. Dieses Feature steckt zwar noch in Kinderschuhen, doch es wird mit Sicherheit noch weiter optimiert und ist heute schon oft sehr hilfreich, solange man nicht großartig bei künstlichem Licht fotografiert (Streifenproblematik, sog. "Banding"). Auch hier ist die A9 unangefochten. - Bilder per WLAN auf‘s Handy oder Tablet übertragen geht einwandfrei und schnell. Nun zu den Kritikpunkten, die aber meist auch andere Sony Kameras wie A7RIII oder A9 betreffen: - Touchscreen ist sehr stiefmütterlich implementiert. AF-Punkt verstellen, in das Bild hineinzoomen und da war‘s. Aber immerhin hat sie überhaupt diese Funktionen, das ist selbst heute noch nicht selbstverständlich. - Ergonomie ist zwar in Ordnung, jedoch sollte man bedenken, dass es keine gute alte DSLR ist. Das Gehäuse ist kompakt und leicht, Platz gibt es also wenig. Manchmal muss ich mir fast schon die Finger ausrenken, bis ich eine Taste erreiche (zum Beispiel Daumenrad). Das ist aber auch bei anderen Sonys A Kameras der Fall. - die Größe des Gehäuses ist klein. Mein kleiner Finger fndet unten keinen Halt. Entweder lebt man damit oder man kauft sich Sonys Griffverlängerung (andere Hersteller wie z.B. JB Designs bieten auch sowas an). - kein externes Ladegerät liegt bei. Sehr ärgerlich. Da ich noch zwei andere Sony A Kameras besitze, habe ich bereits meine zwei Ladegeräte. Aber was ist mit den Leuten, die sich nur eine A7III kaufen möchten? Natürlich geht das Laden mit dem mitgelieferten internen Ladegerät auch, aber das dauert viel zu lange. Und was ist, wenn man mehrere Akkus besitzt? Kauft euch auf jeden Fall ein externes Ladegerät, sonst schimpft ihr nur. - 4K/30P 100Mbps Video lässt sich selbst mit schnellen UHS-I Speicherkarten nicht drehen. Was mit anderen Kameras von Nikon und Canon problemlos geht, wird hier von Sony künstlich gesperrt. Warum wohl? Na damit du eine teure und meist unnötig schnelle UHS-II Speicherkarte (am besten eine von Sony) kaufst. Dazu kommt noch, dass das Video um Faktor 1,2 gecroppt wird (aus z.B. 20mm werden 24mm). Das sind alles Punkte, die mir spontan eingefallen sind. Wenn mir mit der Zeit noch etwas einfällt, werde ich es ergänzen. Meine Meinung/Empfehlung. Für wen eignet sich die Kamera also? Sie eignet sich für fast alle. Wenn du eine ausgezeichnete Kamera mit sehr gutem Autofokus und all den sinnvollen Features wie Augen-AF, elektronischer Sucher, super starke Batterie und sehr gute Bildqualität suchst, dann kauf sie dir. Sie ist nicht die Beste Sony, nein. Sony hat im eigenen Hause noch weitere Modelle, welche bei manchen Sachen besser sind als die A7III. Zum Beispiel bietet die A7RIII eine höhere Auflösung, Pixel Shift, 4K 30p ohne 1,2x Crop (A9 auch) sowie und deutlich leiseres Verschlussgeräusch. Die A9 ist noch zuverlässiger beim Fokussieren, hat einen einmaligen blackoutfreien Sensor gepaart mit deutlich überlegenem elektronischen Verschluss (so gut wie kein Banding und Rolling Shutter). Auch haben diese beiden Kameras bessere Sucher und Displays. Aber all das sind Sachen, die dich zwingen noch tiefer in die Tasche zu greifen. Wenn du das eine oder andere brauchst, dann kauf dir das entsprechende Modell. Alle aktuellen Sony Full Frame Kameras sind Meisterwerke der Technik und mit keiner machst du etwas falsch. Entscheide dich einfach nach deinem Bauchgefühl bzw. nach den Punkten, die dir wichtig sind. Zu der A7III muss gesagt werden, dass sie aus meiner Sicht die Kamera mit dem aktuell besten Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis ist. Kein anderer Hersteller bietet momentan mehr für den Geldbetrag. Sie wird dir auf jeden Fall Spaß bereiten, dafür ist sie gebaut worden. PS: Sony, weiter so! Ihr seid auf dem richtigen Weg! Nikon und Canon, wacht auf! Der Zug ist zwar schon abgefahren, kann aber noch aufgeholt werden.
