I really don't understand how native English speakers can mistake this for a real bear spray. I'm a first generation immigrant who learned to speak English here and it was clear as day to me that this is NOT bear spray. It says INERT in the description!!!!!! The only reason I can think of, is that they see a low price, and think they got a steal, and want to blame it on the seller later. You can't find real bear spray for $20 anywhere. So read the description. It's VERY CLEAR what you're buying. And very helpful to learn how to use the actual spray. It works very well, and sprays far! We encountered couple of bears on a hike and I will not be unprepared again.

I bought this product to practice using bear spray and the first time I used it I sprayed it twice for a couple of seconds each and it only sprayed about 10 feet.. Then later I assembled a class to use it a third time and it had no spray left. To my knowledge it never discharged accidentally nor did the safety come off and yet from the start it seemed defective. I would like a new one that actually has some propellant in it.

I saw a video of someone using a bear spray and thought this would act the same. Theirs had a very sharp stream, much like the "Jet" setting on your water hose. Also, theirs went far. NOTE: I just saw the recent Amazon video and I am not comparing this part to that. I will address the Amazon video in the last paragraph. This one was tested in the winter. It was cold, and I tried to put it near the heater before using, to warm it up. It was still probably cold. Anyway, when I finally decided to test it, I shot it out and it didn't go as far as expected. Maybe 10-12 feet? I was expecting 20 feet+. It was not a "Jet" either... it was more of the "Mist" setting, but super high-powered. Imagine a fire extinguisher. I just watched the Amazon video, and this seems accurate. They advertise a MAXIMUM of 35ft... which I assume is in perfect conditions. I.e. a warm bottle, the wind blowing with you, no obstructions, etc. The video shows the spray going somewhere between 8-15 feet... which I think is accurate. When I imagine a huge bear... this is pretty close. So, I would assume you would only use this when a bear has already approached you, or if you are trying to relieve an attack on your dog or a person. I am always with my dog and she can be defensive, so I could see this being my only scenario. I would try this thing out and get comfortable with it (quick) before expecting to come across bears. My idea of the distance and spray was different, but I now see how it works. Last note: I think I sprayed it about 3x with 2-second holds each time. If I held it down through the whole bottle, I would say it would last no more than 5-6 seconds. So be sure when you pull the trigger, like a gun.

At US$21.99 at time of purchase, it felt a little pricey for a practice round (more than half the price of an actual potent canister). Nevertheless, given our lack of experience in bear country we wanted to have a feel of the spray mechanism/distance/mist pattern in case we did need to use the actual spray. It was a fun experience as we each shared a few seconds of the spray; one person pretending to be a bear running towards to the sprayer :) really helped gauge the distance when you should start spraying (closer than comfort zone) and the direction (more at the feet).

I ordered this thinking it was actual bear spray, however it is inert training spray. I contacted the company selling it and was offered a refund. Great customer service, thx!

We are beyond mad! This labeling and ad are SO misleading! The ad love AND too bold live in the can say BEAR ATTACK DETERRENT. Call us crazy, but that’s VERY misleading and can put your clients in danger. Thank God we read further and TRIED to return this — but it’s non returnable. You should be ashamed of yourself for misleading people and putting them in danger against BEARS. You need to change your ad and the can to clearly say training for bear attacks at the top and not BEAR ATTACK DETERRENT. Awful.

Everyone should purchase this in preparation for using the real one. Small price to pay.
