First rate laptops, nothing is better than these
HP's high-end stuff is great. Nobody makes it slicker, skinnier, lighter, with better materials and feel, reliability, just fantastic business laptops. Their next tier down is pretty good, too, but these Elitebooks are outstanding. Not even that fruit company produces hardware that is in any way more impressive than this. The 15" model has the number keypad and a really nice screen for us old people. If you don't need either of those, the 14" 840 is the way to go, lighter and smaller.EDIT: A few years later, I'd go with a Lenovo in some case, because their keyboards are outstanding.

solid desktop replacement with good portability
I've been using this exact model for 6 months as my work computer. It boots fast and adapts well when plugged into a monitor or moving locations. Good battery life. No issues running MS Office, web based/citrix programs, GOTO, good speakers, good keyboard with number pad, good screen. Built in camera with sliding privacy cover is a nice touch.I don't game. Smoothly transitions program to program with lots of open programs and tabs, and multi-tasks well.Speed does lag running large PDF graphic drawing files, but is about the same or faster as the Xeon powered monstrosity with a dedicated graphics card. Probably because the rendering is driven more by my network speed than the computer speed. However the CR ratings show that upgrading from my i5 processor to the i7 processor is worthwhile.I recommend the thunderbolt plug in adapter for your desktop - makes connecting to monitors/mouse/Lan/power a snap though I've had issues with drivers and I have to re-boot once a week to keep things working. The Thunderbolt only has one hdmi port, so also had to get a VGA adaptor to run 2 monitors. At desk I usually run 2 matching monitors plus the laptop monitor with no issues.Slightly annoying if you use the Function keys a lot, the shortcuts (like speaker volume) are the standard function, and you have to hold down the fn key to get F5 or F9. Also there is no dedicated Insert key, you have to shift-zero key to get insert. This really slows me down. The hdmi and lan plug location is less than optimal, on the right side of the keyboard where I want my mouse. No backwards compatibility with older HP power supplies, but no issues with the aftermarket power supply I purchased. All in all I am very happy with this computer and would buy it again, but at the current $1200 price there are better options.
