A Variety best music book of 2024 A FLOOD best music book of 2024 A Clash best music book of 2024 A Mother Jones best book of 2024 "In a career and life full of fictions, the truthโas this excellent, detailed biography makes clearโwas often as mind-boggling [. . .] Hip-hop writer S.H. Fernando Jr. benefits from an insiderโs understanding of the milieu and provides generous context." โ Kitty Empire, The Guardian Over 50k copies sold, the definitive biography of MF DOOM, charting the reclusive and revered hip-hop artistโs life, career, and eventual immortality. On December 31, 2020, the world was shocked to learn about the death of hip-hop legend MF DOOM. Born in London and raised in the suburban enclave of Long Beach, New York, Daniel Dumile Jr.'s love of cartoons and comic books would soon turn him into one of hip-hop's most enigmatic, prolific, and influential figures. Sweeping and definitive, The Chronicles of DOOM: Unraveling Rapโs Masked Iconoclast recounts the rise, fall, redemption, and untimely demise of MF DOOM. Broken down into five sections: The Man, The Myth, The Mask, The Music, and The Legend, journalist S. H. Fernando, or SKIZ, chronicles the life of Daniel Dumile Jr., beginning in the house he grew up in in Long Beach, NY, into the hip-hop group KMD, onto the stage of his first masked show, through the countless collabs, and across the many different cities Daniel called home. Centering the music, SKIZ deftly lays out the history of east-coast rap against DOOM's life story and dissects the personas, projects, tracks, and lyrics that led to his immortality. Including exclusive interviews with those who worked closely with DOOM and providing an unknown, intimate, behind the scenes look into DOOMโs life, The Chronicles of DOOM is the definitive biography of MF DOOM, a supervillain on stage and hero to those who paid attention. Review: Truly understands and respects MF Doomโs impact. - The chronicles of Doom is a must read for any MF Doom fan. What really stood out to me is how the book breaks down his story by focusing entire chapters on his discography. Instead of just skimming over albums, it takes the time to explore each project in context-where Doom was creatively, what he was experimenting with, and how each release fit into his mythos. The structure makes the book easy to follow while still feeling deep and intentional, especially for readers who want to understand Doom beyond the surface level mystique. Whether youโre a longtime listener or someone looking to fully appreciate his evolution as an artist, this book does a great job of honoring his legacy through the music itself. It feels thoughtful, detailed, and clearly written by someone who truly understands and respects Mf Doomโs impact. Review: One of the best music biographies I have read - I've read a ton of music biographies, and this may be my favorite. The author did a great job toeing the line between fanboy and providing facts. I just finished the Tupac biography by Stacey Robinson. I think where the author here exceled, and she failed, was not getting lost in minute details. I don't need to know every name of every connection; I am not retracing a crime scene. Here, the author does a brilliant job of going through the chronology of DOOM's rise. Where other reviewers expressed there was not enough details on samples or what makes them great, there are plenty of YouTube clips on individual samples. I don't think the place for that is a book and if it were so, it would be a thousand pages. I found it interesting to get perspective on events such as his brothers passing and his stint in BCDC (Cell number 17). Again, just perspectives from those around him. The author's intent was not to prove these circumstances, but to give theories. You can tell the author is a hug fan but does not go over the top gushing over this rhyme or that beat. He strikes the perfect balance. I bought his book on Wu-tang at the same time as this and cannot wait to read it because of my experience with this book. If it is half as well done as this, I would be pleased.

Easy and interesting read. I appreciated the honesty used by the author regarding DOOM's personal life while respecting their privacy and personal life (as DOOM would like).
