Find of the meteorite “Sikhote-Alin” (found in Russia). and Shooting Star Book in German.This meteorite collectible comes from one of the most spectacular fall of a meteorite in the 20thcentury. For a long time there was no or only little known about the fall in 1947 about 500 kilometers north of Vladivostok. Until now it has been the only meteorite impact which was eye witnessed and is nowadays one of the best scrutinized fall of a meteorite. On a clear winter morning of the 12thFebruary 1947 an unbelievable disaster happens at the Siberian coast of the Pacific: At 10:38 local time a glaring fireball, vying with the radiance of the sun, shoots along the sky. Shortly before it hits the ground, the fireball breaks into pieces with a brute thunder. 25 miles away from Novopoltavka the 100-ton meteorite left a trail of craters within an elliptical stray field of about 1 square kilometer and ten thousands of fragments were scattered in the coniferous forest of the Sikhote-Alin mountains. The meteorite led to 106 impact craters, bigger fragments formed craters with about 26 meters diameter. Since this region is in permafrost the depth of the impacts is relatively low. Many of the fragments were heavily deformed through the impact on the frozen ground and are so called “shrapnels”. The collected fragments add up to a total mass of 27 tons.
