Die Hard 2

"Die Hard" has become the standard by which every action film made since 1988 has been judged and almost invariably found wanting. Films were sold in Hollywood on the basis of being reduced to such ideas as "'Die Hard' in a bus" (i.e, "Speed"). Of course another Hollywood tradition is to make a sequel of any successful film, so in 1990 Bruce Willis went back in front of the camera, this time with director Renny Harlin ("The Long Kiss Goodnight"), to do a sequel. "Die Hard 2: Die Harder" is not as good as the original, but it does have a self-reflexivity that (for the most part) makes this film work. Ultimately I would rate this at 4.5 stars, but by the standard of sequels that is an exceptional accomplishment, so I round up.The plot for "Die Hard 2," which is more unsettling today than it was at the time, has a group of terrorists taking control of Dulles International Airport in Washington D.C in order to secure the release of a South American drug lord (Franco Nero) on his way to the United States for trial. If their demands are not met, they are going to start crashing the circling airplanes. Once again, John McClane (Willis) is in the wrong place at the wrong time, at the airport to pick up his wife, Holly (Bonnie Bedelia), who is on one of those circling airliners. McClane picks up on something wrong and when the airport cops refuse to take it seriously he starts pursuing it on his own, getting in deeper and deeper into the situation. Soon it is clear that what we have here is "Die Hard" in an airport.As I indicated above, the self-reflexivity of the film works in its favor for the most part. The exception to this idea is when McClane repeats the "Yippie-kay-yay" line from the first film, albeit in a large context this time around, put the best example is when a bewildered Holly turns to her husband and asks "Why do these things keep happening to us?" Otherwise, throughout the film what McClane did at the Nakatomi Building comes into play as various characters either dismiss him out of hand or take him seriously because of his reputation. The first time around it was his anonimity that was one of his biggest weapons; this time his "fame" is a double-edged sword.In many ways this sequel follows the original. But the scope has been enlarged as other parties besides the terrorists become much more problematic for our hero than they were the first time around. Plus, this time McClane gets to keep his shoes on, which is good because there is a blizzard going on in addition to the all the terrorist fun. Actually, there is probably too much going on, because "Die Hard 2" lacks the driving focus of the original. It also lacks as strong of a villain, with William Sadler's Colonel Stewart being restrained to the point of inertness. Granted, it would be hard to top Alan Rickman's Hans Gruber, but they certainly could have found something and someone that would have worked a lot better.They could not work Reginald Veljohnson in for anything more than a cameo in this one, but the cinematic law of convenient coincidences finds William Atherton's slimy reporter stuck on the plane with Holly. Of the new members of the supporting cast Art Evans as Chief Engineer Leslie Barnes, who can come up with creative problem solving in an emergency, Dennis Franz as Capt. Carmine Lorenzo, the airport chief of security who has no use for McClane, Tom Bower as Marvin, who lives in the bowels of the airport with all of the maps, John Amos as the major from special forces who taught the bad guy everything he knows, and future senator Fred Dalton Thomas as the man in charge of the airport control tower.In the final analysis despite the problems with this movie, especially in comparison to the original, it is Bruce Willis as John McClane who makes this work because he manages to keep his character as more or less a real person in extraordinary circumstances. He is not as strong as Stallone or Swarzenegger and he is not as smart as Harrison Ford or whoever is playing James Bond in any given year. But he has enough to get the job done. More importantly, I did not have the sense of disappointment that so often comes at the end of movies with this one, which is a pretty good bottom line for anything coming out of Hollywood. We will have to see what happens with the upcoming "Die Hard 4: Die Hardest."

Kept me on the edge of my seat!

Its an old movie but always loved it

I saw this film in the theatre the first time around, back in 1990. I was in my early 20's, and absolutely loved it. Watching the re-wind as a 50ish year old man, I still enjoyed it, BUT I simply can't be that naive, anymore.There were at least a dozen different circumstances that were simply too impossible to ignore, but for me, the biggest one by far was when Bruce Willis (McClain) used an EJECTION SEAT to escape the grounded C-17 or C130 aircraft, after the bad guys lobbed grenades into the cockpit. HINT: Neither the C-17 or the C-130 could ever possibly support ejection seats. Only 1-seater or 2-seater aircraft have the required detachable, exploding canopy, which allows for an ejection seat to function. This was a cargo plane. (Completely impossible. McClain should have died, right there.)

although this is a good movie and solid price, i did purchase this incorrectly. Amazon and the seller did get it worked out in which i was able to return this. Great service, and this is a good item just purchased the wrong movie.

Aahhhh...the good old days when action movies weren’t over-digitized unrealistic crap. I know I’m sounding old and a bit boring (I’m only in my 40’s!) but I like watching REAL men do REAL (or realistic) stunts. In other words, moving in ways that are actually plausible for a human being in a similar situation... not like some of the more recent movies that look more like video games!!! The early 90’s seemed to be some of the last of this more authentic action. Also the actual visual experience of the less digitized movies then just seems more real to me.I won’t necessarily waste time reviewing the plot other than to say I’m maybe one of the few who loves this movie as much as the original. Bruce And Bonnie were great as always, and it was nice seeing Al again (although briefly), but I enjoyed the rest of the cast as well. Dennis Franz (pre- NYPD BLUE) played off Bruce Willis and it kept me laughing. I still use, and think of some of their banter today! And of course the very missed Fred Thompson, RIP. Also, even though they were the bad guys, I thought John Amos And William Sadler did excellent work too. Even the blonde newscaster lady was (unintentionally) funny at times, and Art Evans as the tower engineer Leslie Barnes. And I’m glad William Atherton rejoined again as the proverbial unethical newsman jackass who will do anything for a story and who didn’t love Marvin, the janitor in the basement jamming the 1940’s tunes? 😁Needless to say, I thought Die Hard 2 had a good mix of humor AND action. And I liked that they stuck with the Christmas season and being in Washington D.C. instead of L.A., the snow added a nice ambience. One of my favorite action sequences was the snowmobiles, because, well, I love to sled!!!Many sequels never touch the first but IMO, for me, this one is just as good. If you haven’t seen it, get it. Great price for this movie on blu-ray. Be careful as cover is different than the picture in this listing. I wanted the one I seen as it matches my other 2 blu-rays but got alternative cover.

Doch auch diesmal klappt Johns Rendezvous nicht so ganz: Eine Gruppe abtrünniger Elitesoldaten ist angetreten, um die Auslieferung eines mittelamerikanischen Drogenbosses zu verhindern. Mitten im Weihnachtsflugverkehr legen sie die Flugleitung des großen Airports lahm ' die Mannschaft des Towers muss machtlos zusehen, wie die Terroristen ihr Vorhaben wahrmachen. Als die Flughafenpolizei eingreift, beweisen sie ihre Macht: Kaltblütig schicken sie die 200 Passagiere einer anfliegenden Maschine in den Tod. Sie sind auf alles vorbereitet, haben für jeden Schritt einen Plan ' doch sie haben McClane nicht eingerechnet. Denn John hat einen ganz persönlichen Grund einzugreifen: Der Sprit in Hollys Flugzeug wird knapp. McClane hat nur 90 Minuten Zeit, seine Frau zu retten. Dabei hält ihn nichts auf. Nicht die bürokratischen Kollegen der Airport-Polizei. Nicht politische Überlegungen. Und schon gar nicht eine übermächtige Truppe durchtrainierter Söldner...Bildbewertung:Trotz des alters des Film haben die Macher ein top Bild auf die Blu Ray gezaubert. Natürlich kann das Bild nicht mit Stirb Langsam 4.0 verglichen werden, jedoch ist das Bild 1A und ein genuß auf jedem Plasma TV.Tonbewertung:Der Surround-Sound wärend den Action-Sequenzen läßt es ordentlich Krachen und hat einen deutlich besseren Klang als auf der DVD. Die Stimmen der Darsteller sind klar & deutlich zu verstehen, sowohl im Orginal als auch bei der deutschen Synchronisation.Bonusmaterial:Die Extras sind komplett von der DVD übernommen und auch in der gleichen Qualität.Fazit:Klasse Blu Ray eines Action Klassiker mit 1A Bild & Sound

This blu-ray has an average Picture and sound quality. Not a significant upgrade from DVD. Contrast level, details are mediocre for a bluray standard. Sound is also not up to the mark. Greatly disappointed. Not recommended for anyone who already owns a DVD of this movie title.
