Do these need to be activated? I wore one on each ankle for about 1/2 hour and was badly bitten.

Hi there, Thank you for reaching out! A single pellet fits safe and snug in the mesh pocket on the outside of the band. As the oils’ active ingredients are released into the air around you, they help to mask the scents of your breath and body, making it harder for mosquitoes to find you. Super simple, super effective. -Insert the active pellet into the band -Wear it on your wrist or ankle -Or keep it near you Best, Para Kito

Can you pick your scents? I hate the smell of citronella & lavender!

You may not. There is only one scent available.
