The Art of Jim Burns: Hyperluminal

Sci fi fans of a certain age will well remember Jim Burns artwork from the dozens of wonderous covers and posters he did in plentitude, and still does to this day.They were always striking and instantly recognizable.Indeed "Planet Story" remains one of my all time favorites, because typically it captures the real strength of Jim's talents,the ability to draft and paint truely imaginative worlds, with often stunningly drawn backgrounds and vehicles ,and beautifully done alien and human characters. I have collected every one of his volumes over the years, from "Planet Story " and "Lightship", to "Transluminal" and "Imago". This volume contains a range of images from all of them, plus more of his more recent work, which actually seems to become more incredibly detailed as he has made the switch to digital illustration.Kudos to him for learning some new techniques to supplement his other considerable skills in the illustrators mediums already. The quality of the hardback and the printing are superb, and they combine wonderfully to make a brilliant exhibition by showcasing the vivid beauty and detail of his work, so it is thanks once again to Titan,whose have managed ,like they did with the recent release of Chris Foss's "Hardware", to really cover best of his work over the decades and bring back some happy memories of other times and imagintitve spaces for me.I just wish I still had one of his old posters to stick on the wall like I used to. Buy it immediately without any chance of regret!!! Oh, and thanks to Amazon who got this to me in less than twenty four hours. I am amazed.

This is a fine showcase presentation of the work of Jim Burns the sci-fi/fantasy artist.The book is well illustrated covering a good deal of his output, with large colour reproductions of his oils, acrylics and latterly his digital work; there are even a few pages of his drawings.A good hardback reference volume or handy introduction to this talented and very meticulous artist – one of the old school, but still a marvellously imaginative figure on the scene.

Probably every major Sci-Fi and fantasy author had the privilege of working with Jim Burns on their covers. And the results are impressive. An illustrated history of the man behind the golden age of Science Fiction and one of the most extraordinary gallery in our minds of fantastical horizons.
