Humility: The Journey Toward Holiness – Classic Devotional Meditations on the Character of Christ

My favorite book! I'll read this over and over throughout my life. I highly recommend it.

This is a must read for any Christian who truly wants to understand the importance humility plays in representing Christ in an authentic way. It is a hard lesson in ways but it is the living proof that we are trying to live our lives as Jesus, who worked so hard to get the disciples of His day and now us today to comprehend. This is ultimate essence of who He is and who we should strive to be.

In our fallen state, humility points us to the only way by which we can return to our rightful place as creatures. (p.10) I have been challenging myself to read a few Christian Classics. I decided to review this true Christian “classic”. If you are unaware of this book, I hope this will raise your interest enough to go to pick up a copy and read it. “Humility”, by Andrew Murray comes highly recommended and regarded by others I know. For me it is possibly in my top ten favorite Christian books so far. Humility is something that transcends our understanding in many ways and one of the true character marks of someone who follows Jesus. This book helps clear up some misconceptions on what humility is and what it is not as well as how to exercise more of it One of my favorite quotes from this book is, “There is no pride so dangerous, none so subtle and insidious, as the pride of holiness.” That says a lot right there. I also really liked Murray's understanding that true humility will be evidenced in our relationships with others and not just our posture toward God. I think for some people they see themselves as humble in their relationship with God but it is not evidenced in their relationships with others. It is easy to think that we humble ourselves before God, but our humility toward others is the only sufficient proof that our humility before God is real. Near the end is a great sample prayer to pray to God for more humility, but I’ll let you see that one for yourself after you buy your own must-have copy of this book. I very highly recommend this book for every single Christian. This is a real 5-star book. Here are some of my favorite quotes: When I look back upon my own Christian experience, or at the church of Christ as a whole, I am amazed at how little humility is seen as the distinguishing feature of discipleship. Humility, the place of entire dependence upon God, is from the very nature of things the first duty and the highest virtue of His creatures. And so pride— the loss of humility— is the root of every sin and evil. Humility is the only soil in which virtue takes root; a lack of humility is the explanation of every defect and failure. Humility is not so much a virtue along with the others, but is the root of all, because it alone takes the right attitude before God and allows Him, as God, to do all. Let us consider how our lack of love, indifference to the needs and feelings of others, even sharp comments and hasty judgments that are often excused as being honest and straightforward, are thwarting the effect of the influence of the Holy Spirit on others. Manifestations of temper and touchiness and irritation, feelings of bitterness and estrangement, have their root in nothing but pride.

A really good book to read very short, but very good

Thought I knew the meaning of humility. Andrew Murray puts it into a proper perspective before God and others. I have ordered this book in 2 different formats and will keep it in my library for a reread reminder.

This isn’t just a book you read once. it’s one you return to often for reflection and realignment. If you desire spiritual growth and transformation from the inside out, this book will bless you beyond measure. A true Christian classic that every believer should have in their library. 🙏🏽

The is not the original version of Murray’s book, but has been edited “with updated language” which some readers may find more accessible. Those who have read the original may here find some of the edges of Murray’s language slightly dulled. The author used KJV which has here been replaced with the NIV. One other change that is regrettable is that the author made additional notes on three particular chapters which were originally included at the end of the chapter; one senses that the author welled up with more to say after seeing the first printing (Note A in chapter one is a barn burner!). But in this version those notes are relegated to the back of the book without even an asterisk to indicate their absence, and are not available in the context as Murray intended. Unfortunately, the other version available on Amazon (tree on the cover) has some sloppy typos, but I still prefer it. I might give this one to a young reader. If I had one book in addition to the Bible on a desert island, Murray’s little jewel on humility would be it. But the original version has a bit more tooth and less butter. That said, for those who need a simpler version, this is still a very useful book.

Andrew Murray was and continues to be a tremendous blessing to the Body of Christ. This book is an essential read on the subject of humility.

Amazing book! If you want to know about true humility, get this book! solid gold from beginning to end. So many quotable lines as well.

This book truly gave me the language to what the Holy Spirit had been so diligently witnessing to me, but i was lost to be able to see and hear that all the while the Lord was saying Son its your Humility< My humbly heart testified that will set you free.> This book will bring you back to the cross of Jesus in You.

Great content but at a very unreasonable price!

This book is eloquently written teaching the average Christian how to truly serve God and what his or her faith should look like in pursuing the Almighty. This is something every believer should read to truly equip his life into living a full and powerful existence experiencing the love of God.

This is a small book with a powerful message of humility, simply expressed, for those looking to live a holy life. Easily read in a couple of hours it may take a lifetime to really get your head and heart around.
