Here's how to use this thing. Put it on the blade with the blade running through the centers of the metal parts. Now rub sharpener back and forth along the blade. Keep doing that over and over but start adding some "downward pressure" on each pass until you start noticing that when you are rubbing in one direction the sharpener just seems to slip and slide along but when you go the other direction there's some "resistance". That's when the sharpening is happening. Now that you know which direction is sharpening the blade, push down on the sharpener as you slide it in that direction and relax when you bring it back to the beginning. Keep doing that until the brown, rusty color on the blade edge disappears and you see clean, shiny bare metal. It takes some effort, but mowing with a fresh sharpened blade is rewarding . . rewarding enough that you won't dread doing it again after you've gotten the hang of it. (It's not like you need to do it every time you mow, anyway) I don't remember what I paid for it, but it was definitely worth it, and I would buy it again if I were to lose this one. It seems to be made well enough for the money as well.

As stated. probably better to use a file or alternative. It's hard to get an even sharpening, doesn't go that sharp and takes lots of material off.

Broke on first use, didn’t even get to finish sharpening the blades.

It gets the job done. Mine chipped. I'm quite sure that was because my blades were in really bad condition however. I plan to buy another one to see how it holds up now that my blades are in better condition.
