many reviews that the paint job on the black/white one is very poor - anyone recently get the black - how is it?

I ordered the white with black colored owl. The paint job is great. No problems.

Can these be left outside on a deck or patio?

I would not suggest it because of its height/weight and do not believe it is not made of a weather resistant material. I would recommend this one: Solar Powered Owl Light Decoration- Ultra Durable Polyresin- Highest Capacity Battery- Intricate Detailing- Wireless Outdoor Accent Lighting- Best Decor Ornament for Garden/Patio/Yard (Bronze Brown) by Solario.

Has anyone noticed that this looks like Yayoi Kusama's art?

WOW! I was unfamiliar with this artist until you asked the question. It is almost identical. Crazy.
