good design and function
A good design of float switch. Its rounded, compact shape is ideal for residential sump pits. The switch requires 3.5" of play to function properly, but it doesn't need the full 7" from bottom to top to trigger. It includes a metal clamp (which you press the cord into, in lieu of a zip-tie), which requires a pump with a screw-in spot on its top. My late-1990s sump pump has such a spot and the included screw even fits! It's also possible to just ziptie the float (by its cord) to your outlet piping, but I found that provided less consistent float performance.I had a float switch of this design that lasted for 17 years. I then used a much inferior, larger square-edged float switch that would get caught on parts of my sump pit and stopped working reliably after just 2 years. I've only had this new float switch for a short time, but I'm hoping it approaches that 17 year run. I'll update if it fails unexpectedly, but thus far I'm pleased. Recommended.

Very handy device
After 20+ years of service, the float switch on my Zoeller sump pump died. But, the pump still worked well, and I didn't want to get rid of it. So I got this float switch.Very simple product. When the float is upright, a connection is made and anything plugged into the piggyback outlet turns on. Easy to install:1) position the float based on the water level that you want the pump to turn on2) plug in your pump into the piggyback outlet3) plug it into the wall.Done! You can use this with pretty much any pump. I have a cheap spare utility pump that I use as a backup. It does not have a float switch, so I'm going to order a second one of these so I can turn that into an automatic pump as well.Seems to be well-made, but I'll update the review if problems crop up down the road. They also make a model that is a vertical float if you have a small sump. I don't think Amazon carries it, however - happened to see it at a home improvement big box store.

If I was smarter, I wouldn't have needed this, but since I wasn't, it's a smart buy.
Price not bad, all I saved over local big box price was the tax, and in my state, I have to report my non-taxed taxable purchases and pay that on my income tax return at the end of the year anyway. Bought this to turn a 1/4 HP utility pump into an automatic sump pump in a trash can that catches overflow from my poorly-pitched 2nd story rain gutters that I can't reach due to the previous homeowner putting a bunch of fenceposts in the way with too much concrete. I also use it to drain my daughter's inflatable 300 gallon pool; I run a 50' garden hose downhill from the pool, drop the sump in, plug it in, and walk away. Even after the switch float sinks & opens, the downhill pitch is enough for siphon action to pull the rest of the water through the pump. It's substantial, nothing flimsy, so I expect it'll outlast the pump to which I've affixed it. I just wish I'd have bought a sump pump with a rod-guided float to start with.Amazon saved me a trip to the big box home improvement store, at least, or having to mingle with the WalMartians. But they didn't save me any money to speak of on this one; usually I don't buy here unless it saves me over local buying, 7% sales tax notwithstanding, but this time I was just too lazy to wade out into the unwashed masses.

Quality Product
What a life saver. AT the start of the pandemic my Zoller ejector pump switch failed and the pump would not shut off. I caught the issue before the motor burned out. I ordered this float switch and it arrived very quickly. I then disconnected the float switch and use this float switch to bypass the internal one on the Zoller. This bypass worked like a charm, the pump operated like new for a fraction of replacing the pump. Excellent product. Thank you

Converted my utility pump to an automatic sump pump
I bought this item sight unseen, to convert my 1/6 HP Flotec utility pump into an automatic sump pump. Before buying this, I had three major concerns:1) Since my pump turns on and off only by plugging it in, would the float switch even work with it?2) Would the float switch cycle on and off too frequently as the water level fluctuated?3) How and where would I attach the float switch?Upon receiving the item, all my concerns were satisfied.1) The "piggyback plug" works as expected. You leave the pump plugged in to it all the time.2) Once the switch cycles on, the water level has to drop about 5-6 inches before it cycles off.3) The float switch comes with two mounting options. One of the options was a small metal bracket and a screw that exactly fit a mounting post on the top of my utility pump. You do need a good size sump well for this tethered float switch to work. They recommend 14" diameter but I think you could make it work with a 12" well by placing the pump against one side of the well.

Works perfectly
I bought this because our sump pump was cycling on and off all the time. It was easy to attach to the pump and I was able to adjust it so the pump does not come on until the water has reached the proper level. The sump was built so that it has a gravity drain, but because the sump pump has an internal, non-adjustable float, I could not adjust it. So, the water never had a chance to drain before the pump would come on. I didn't want to just shut the pump off for fear of the gravity drain getting clogged and flooding the basement. The perfect solution was to purchase this float switch and adjust it so the pump would wait for the water level to rise enough for the gravity drain to work. Now the pump only comes on if the gravity drain cannot handle all the water(almost never).

Worked Perfectly
Real Lifesaver. My Sump pump switch was stuck in the on position and would not turn off. The Float Switch controled the sump pump operation and helped me sleep better at night, knowing we would not have a flooded basement. Additionally, resting the original sump pump switch must have helped because now the sump pump switch is working again too. I had ordered a Flotec Easy Sump Pre-plumbed Sump Pump and was preparing to install it when the old sump pump came back to life. I really like the idea of a pre-plumbed pump and I am saving it for the day I will need it, as no sump pump lasts forever. I am so lucky.

Item arrived ahead of estimated time and in good order. Works well
Item arrived ahead of estimated time and in good order. Works well. It's only been running for about a month now so that's why only four stars - I will update to 5 if its still running in a year or so (and if I remember after that long!).

Terrific product!
Works perfectly. Although this can work on any submersible pump, I use this in the top of a barrel filter for a Koi pond that uses an external pump. If the pump inlet clogs and the water level drops, this float switch will shut down both the pump and the UV clarifier, ensuring that neither overheats. Terrific product!

Great Float Pump
Somewhat challenging to install but works perfectly. Shuts down the pump when the water is low and restarts once the level is high again. Just like advertised.
